한국과 미국의 사회 교과서에 반영된 교과문식성 연구

A Study on the Subjective Literacy in Social Textbooks of Korea and America

교과 학습에서 교과 내용과 문식성은 모두 중요하며 상호보완적 관계에 있다. 이 연구에서는 이 점에 주목하여 이원교육과정(dual-track curriculum)을 제안하였다. 교과 내용과 언어 기능이 연계됨에 따라 교과 학습이 촉진되고, 언어가 사용되는 맥락이 풍부해짐에 따라 언어 기능도 향상된다. 그러므로 학생들이 사회 교과 시간에 교과 내용을 배울 때 언어 기능을 연계할 필요가 있다. 이 글에서는 한국의 사회 교과서에 반영된 교과문식성 내용, 이원교육과정을 적용하고 있는 미국의 사회 교과서에 반영된 교과문식성 내용을 각각 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 사회 교과문식성 향상을 위한 바람직한 사회 교과서 개발 방향을 제안하였다. 첫째, 사회과 교육과정에 ‘이원교육과정’(dual-track curriculum)을 적극적으로 반영 해야 한다. 둘째, 사회 교과서 개발 단계에 사회과 교육 전문가와 문식성 전문가가 공동으로 참여해야 한다. 셋째, 사회 교과 학습 주제에 관한 다양한 유형의 읽기 제재와 쓰기 과제를 사회 교과서에 제시해야 한다. 넷째, 사회 교과서에 ‘사회 교과서 읽기 기능’ 코너를 마련하고 문식성 기능 학습을 위한 절차적 지식이 잘 드러나게 구성해야 한다. 다섯째, 사회 교과서에 ‘어휘 학습’ 코너 및 ‘사회 교과 특수 기능’ 코너를 마련해야 한다.

The relation of Subject content and literacy is complementary. By giving attention to this relation, in this study I suggested dual-track curriculum. When the student study about the learning content of the social subject class, it is necessary to connect subject content with the language function. By linking the subject learning content and literacy, the student’s subject learning ability can be improved and by the abundant language use in context, the student’s literacy is also improved. In this study I observed respectively, the subject literacy content which is reflected in Korean social textbook and subject literacy content which is reflected in American social textbook. I suggested desirable social textbook development direction for the improvement of the social subject literacy on the ground of this study. 1. ‘Dual-track curriculum’ should be actively reflected in Social Studies curriculum. 2. Literacy specialist and Social Studies education specialist should be participate as core re-searchers at the development stage of the social subject textbook. 3. Various type of the reading materials and writing tasks about the Social Studies subject theme should be presented in Social Studies textbook. 4. Social Studies textbook should include the corner of ‘Reading Social Studies and be organized to expose the procedural knowledge well. 5. Social lesson textbook should provide the corner of the ‘Vocabulary Study’ and ‘ Social Studies Special Skills.
