This study introduces the 2015 revised curriculum with four core competencies— self-administered competency, knowledge information processing competence, community competence, and communication competence—and discusses how to efficiently teach ‘Reading English and American Literature’ class to fit these core competencies. ‘Reading English and American Literature’ is newly adopted for the 2015 revised curriculum, so a lot of preparation and study for this class are required. There are controversial issues on a ‘Reading English and American Literature’ class for high school students in Korea because students want better results on their college entrance exams within a short time span. This study examines and discusses this issue with positive perspectives based on preceding studies. The study chooses the Lois Lowry’s The Giver, analyzes it, and designs sample lesson plans to fit four core competencies. High school teachers may change these lessons based on the students’ level, interests, or on the direction of teachers classes. Each lesson focuses on one core competency, but teachers may teach other interrelated competencies together. Student-Centered Instruction, not a traditional teaching style, is designed to help develop core competencies and to improve students’ communicative competence. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to develop Reading English and American literature class and to create a consensus to forster creative and convergence talents that the Ministry of Education expects from classroom teaching.
