This study investigated the anti-oxidative, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities of Spergularia marina L. Griseb extract as used as a natural ingredient in cosmetic products. The extracts were ethanol extraction at room temperature. Total polyphenol was 92.27±1.85 mg tannic acid/g dry weight. The result of the 2,2‘-azinobis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid] (ABTS) radical scavenging activity and the electron donating of all extracts was highest at 10,000 μg/ml (96.9~98.95%) and was significantly increased in a concentration-dependent manner. In an antimicrobial activity test, the extract showed relatively high antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. epidermidis, S. aureus. Furthermore, Spergularia marina L. Griseb extract was found to be toxic at 500 μg/ml concentration in RAW264.7 cell. Anti-inflammatory activity by nitric oxide (NO) assay showed lipopolysacchride (LPS)-induced NO was significantly inhibited following treatment with Spergularia marina L. Griseb extract and decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) proteins were significantly inhibited following treatment Spergularia marina L. Griseb extracts with 100 μg/ml. Accordingly, it can be concluded that Spergularia marina L. Griseb extract will be used as a natural ingredient in cosmetic material.
