`사랑`을 통해 본 萬海의 近代認識

A study on Manhae`s Modern recognition focused on the concept of `Love`

본 연구는 만해 한용운의 문학작품에 나타난 ‘사랑’을 분석함으로써 만해의 근대인식이 갖는 의의를 살펴보았다. 만해는 당대의 방탕한 연애문화를 비판하며, 소설 『죽음』과 시집 『님의 沈默』을 창작하여 근대적인 사랑의 가치를 모색하였다. 그는 서구의 낭만적 사랑에 흡수되지 않으면서, 당대의 사랑 풍조를 비판적으로 극복하고 우리의 근대가 지향해야 할 사랑의 전범을 제시하고자 한다. 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 만해는 사랑의 감정이란 인격적 감화에 근거해야 한다고 보았다. 美와 德과 官能에 의거하는 서구적 사랑과는 달리, 인격에 사랑의 발화점을 둠으로써 만해가 인식한 사랑은 일차적으로 동양적인 윤리를 사랑의 기준으로 삼았다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 만해는 지속성과 불변성을 갖는 감정으로 사랑을 인식함으로써 자유결혼이라는 근대적 제도와 이러한 감정을 갈등 없이 합치시킨다. 만해의 이러한 사랑에 대한 인식은 전근대적인 부부애나 근대적인 연애의 정서를 두루 포함하고 있다. 이는 만해의 근대인식 속에 이 두 측면이 충돌과 접합의 지점을 동시에 함유하고 있음을 말해주는 것으로, 충돌과 균열의 과정 속에서 만해는 우리가 만들어나가고자 한 주체적 근대, 즉 서구에 일방적으로 흡수되지 않는 선택가능한 근대를 상정해 나갔다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine Manhae’s modern recognition focused on the concept of ‘love’ which is expressed in his works. Manhae wrote the novel named “Jukeum”(Death) and the poetical works named “Nimui ch’immuk”(the silence of my love) in search of the value of modern love to criticize the dissipated love at that time. It may be summarized as follow, firstly, Manhae asserted that modern Love must be based by influence of character. Against western love according to the beauty, virtue and voluptuousness, He suggested the main criteria of love oriented toward traditional eastern ethic. Secondly, because Manhae emphasize the continuity and invariability of love, the concept of Love could combine with modern marriage system called by free marriage without conflict, Like this, Manha’s concept of love includes a premodern conjugal love and a modern free love. So, Manhae’s modern recognition has a creative power mixed the traditionalism with the modernism beyond western modernity.
