이청준의「가수(假睡)」에 나타난 소설미학

Novel aesthetics in Lee Chung-joon s “Gasu(假睡)”

한국소설사에서 이청준만큼 소설 미학적 문제들을 소설 안으로 끌어들여 치열 하고 집중적으로 서사화한 작가는 많지 않다. 이청준의 소설이 반복적으로 자기 반영적 메타서사로 나아가는 맥락을 규명하기 위해서는 이청준 소설의 상호텍스 트적인 분석을 통해서 그의 소설 미학 전반에 대한 이해가 진행되어야 한다. 이글의 분석 대상인 「가수(假睡)」는 이청준의 자기반영적 소설 중에서도 특히 그의 소설론이 중층적으로 집약되어 있는 소설이라 할 수 있다. 「가수」는 이청준의 여타의 소설이나 산문, 작가 후기 등에 진술되어 있는 문학론과의 연관적 검토와 이해 없이는 그 전모가 쉽게 해명되지 않는 소설이라 할 수 있다. 이 작품은 두 개의 서사, 내부서사인 주영훈의 이야기와 주영훈의 이야기를 추적하고 해석하는 외부서사로 구성되어 있다. 이 글은 소설 「가수」의 ‘격자소설’ 형식에 주목하면서 안과 밖의 서사가 근거하고 있는 소설론적 구조와 논리를 분석한다. 요컨대 「가수」는 개인의 내적 진실을 드러내는 것이 소설의 몫이라는 이청준의 소설미학을 그대로 드러내면서, 자기 증거의 형식이 아닌 한 어떠한 소설쓰기도 온전한 실체와 진실에 도달할 수 없다는 이청준의 일관된 미학적 논리를 보여준 다. 또한 소설은 결코 영구불변의 절대 계율이 되어서는 안 되며 끊임없는 자성과 변화의 과정 속에 있어야 한다는, 그것이 ‘소설의 운명’이라는 이청준 소설론의 핵심적 사유도 내포하고 있다.

There are not many writers who portray fictional aesthetic problems into novels and fiercely and intensively narrate them in Korean novels. In order to elucidate the context in which Lee s novels repeatedly lead to self-reflective meta-narratives, Lee s interpretation of the novel s aesthetics should proceed through a cross-textual analysis of novels. The subject of analysis of this article, Gasu“ is a novel in which Lee s novels, especially his novels, are concentrated in layers. Gasu“ is a novel that can not be easily understood without a thorough review and understanding of the literary theory stated in other novels, prose, late writings of Lee Chung–joon. This work consists of two narratives, an inner narrative by Ju Yeong Hoon and an external narrative that traces and interprets Ju Yeong Hoon. This article focuses on the lattice novel form of the novel Gasu“ and analyzes the novelist structure and logic on which the in and out narratives are based. Through this, I try to explain the characteristics and aesthetic logic of Lee s self – reflective narrative.
