Purpose - This research aims to analyze the change trends in global value chains and to examine the trade structure, GVCs participation and competitiveness of Korean manufacturing Industry by sectors. Design/methodology/approach - This study systematically investigated the various analytical methodologies developed for measuring GVCs, and then proposed some new methods of using the Forward and Backward Linkage-Revealed Comparative Advantage Index(F-B RCA index). Additionally, we analyzed the status and participation of Korean manufacturing industries in GVCs using Participation and F-B RCA index. Findings - According to the analysis, the GVCs participation in the Korean manufacturing sector was being reorganized around the Asian region in view of the weakening of such GVCs as of 2011. In addition, the result of pertaining to the GVCs’ comparative advantage in the Korean manufacturing industry using the FB-RCA Index, the industries with comparative advantages are analyzed in this order: computer electronic and optical products, motor vehicles and trailers, rubber and plastic products, electrical equipment, fabricated metal products, and machinery and equipment. In contrast, it was observed that the comparative disadvantage of food products and beverages, coal and refined petroleum products is increasing. Research implications or Originality - This study is different in that it suggests the use of the Forward and Backward Linkage-Revealed Comparative Advantage Index to measure the competitiveness of industries in GVCs.
