An Analysis of the Meaning of Particles UP/OUT in Phrasal Verbs based on High School English Textbooks

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of phrasal verbs UP/OUT from high school English textbooks based on Park(2012), which suggested the various meanings of phrasal verbs and to observe whether particles UP/OUT combining with the several verbs are being provided as multiple expanded meaning in the context of the high school English textbooks. English education has changed from traditional grammar-translation education to communication-oriented education. With the focus on communication, English fluency and accuracy have been further emphasized, and attention is being focused on spoken English from written English. As English becomes a means of communication, phrasal verbs are increasing not only in informal sentences but also in informal sentences. Nevertheless, Korean English learners still struggle with the grammatical form, vocabulary, and practical use of the phrasal verbs, and even tend to avoid using of phrasal verbs. The reasons for the learning avoidance of phrasal verbs will vary. For this reason, learning of phrasal verbs is very important for English learners to expand their use of English from communication-oriented education, i.e. from everyday conversation to academic scope. To have a wide scope of usage of phrasal verbs in context, the collection of data are 10 books of high school English textbooks. The procedure is to collect particles UP/OUT within the sentences in context. Phrasal verbs are highly productive, and they can create various meanings by combining verbs with particles UP/OUT. To analysis of collected data based on Park, the Hangle program is used. The result shows the meaning of particles UP/OUT in the context with core meanings of its particles and another meanings of particles UP/OUT can be expanded in another context. In conclusion, to infer the meaning of phrasal verbs effectively, it is necessary to learn the core meaning and its individual meaning of expansion in context. Successful acquisition of those phrasal verbs is the expansion of the meaning of particle UP/OUT from the core meaning to the expanded contextual meaning due to repeated exposure in the context of various inputs at different materials.
