나주 차문화에 대한 고찰

A Consideration on Tea Culture in Naju

본 연구는 전남 나주지역에 군락지를 이룬 야생차를 중심으로 역사적 문헌과 관련 자료를 검토하여 차산지, 문헌에 기록된 제다법 등을 살펴보았다. 또한, 자생지역을 직접 답사하여 나주차의 분포현황과 현재의 제다실태를 조사하였다. 나주에서 출가한 초의선사가 한국 차문화의 중흥조로 불리고 있는 사실도 나주의 차문화가 초의의 다도관 정립에 영향을 주었을 개연성을 낳고 있다. 특히 다시 청림산과 가야산, 금성산 등에서 야생하는 차(茶)나무가 다른 지역에 비해 월등히 높은 유전변이를 보유하고 있는 것으로 나타나 향후 신품종 개발 잠재력이 클 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 이러한 차문화적 인프라를 갖춘 나주지역이지만 현실적으로 차문화의 산업적 발전은 다른 지역에 비해 아직은 답보 상태인 안타까운 현실이다. 마지막으로 본 연구를 통해서 나주 전통 차문화를 지역의 정체성 확립에 활용하고, 지역민들에게 도움이 될 수 있도록 문화·산업적인 측면에서 잘 발전시켜 나갈 방향에 도움을 주고자 한다.

This study reviewed the historical literature and relevant data on autogenous teas in the wild forming a colony in Naju, Jeonnam and investigated the tea manufacturing methods recorded in historic sites of tea, tea-producing areas, and literature. It also identified the distribution status of Naju tea and the current status and examined the teas that were being produced by visiting the autogenous areas. The fact that Seon Master Choui who left Naju where he was born is called as reviver of the tea culture of Korea might influence Choui’s view on tea ceremony. Especially tea plants in the wild such as in Mt. Cheongrim, Mt. Gaya, and Mt. Geumseong appeared to have far higher genetic variations than other regions, indicating a big potential of new varieties development in the future. Despite having such tea culture related infrastructure, Naju is at a standstill yet in terms of realistic industrial development of tea culture compared to other regions. Finally, it is hoped that this study can be useful for development in cultural and industrial aspects so that traditional tea culture of Naju can establish its regional identity and give help to the local residents.
