The purpose of this paper is to explore the compact city hypothesis with respect to both theoretical and positive grounds of urban form. It draws some conclusions that the benefits of compactness are not proved empirically yet, and evidences show that urban expansion would be going on because of the suburban-oriented residential choice and the reduction of both transportation and communication costs. The discussion here concentrate on some key issues of urban structure and urban form such as sustainability of urban growth, self-determination of urban residence, the efficiency of urban structure, and the equity of urban society. They measure the hypothesis of the compact city.
