For DC (direct current) power conversion, DC link capacitors are connected in parallel with the DC power supply to perform load balancing, surge protection, and reduction of ripple current. Incorrect selection of the DC bus link capacitor can result in excessive loss and power degradation as well as heat dissipation. Therefore, it is necessary to have a low-impedance DC bus for efficient high-performance inverter applications. This paper presents a practical mathematical approach for properly selecting a DC bus link capacitor for a high-performance switched DC to AC (alternative current) inverter. The usefulness of the proposed DC link capacitor selection method is evaluated using a 100 kW photovoltaic power generation system.
