양초화재 원인 감정에 관한 연구

Cause Analysis in Candle Fire Investigation

양초로 인한 화재 원인은 양초 불꽃과 양초 주변 가연물과의 접촉 등의 일상생활 속의 부주의로 인한 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 양초로 인한 화재원인 규명을 위하여 양초의 열적 특성과 양초관련 화재 증거물의 감정 조건 실험을 수행하였다. 시중에 시판 중인 양초 10종을 시간에 따른 무게 감소속도를 측정하였는데, 양초의 심지 길이 등 크게 의존하지 않았으며, 그 감소속도는 2.6 g/h에서 6.7 g/h의 값을 가졌다. 양초 화재는 주위의 접촉 가연물과 연관이 있으므로, 그 주변의 온도를 측정하였는데, 수평 1 cm 위치에서의 온도는 대략 <TEX>$200^{\circ}C$</TEX>에서 <TEX>$400^{\circ}C$</TEX>로 발화점이 낮은 종이류 등은 불꽃과 접촉하지 않고 발화할 가능성이 있다. 양초의 녹는점은 대략 <TEX>$50^{\circ}C$</TEX>에서 <TEX>$70^{\circ}C$</TEX> 사이이며 양초의 주성분은 유기지방산 또는 탄소개수 20개 이상의 노말 탄화수소이다. 가스크로마토그래프/질량분석기를 이용하여 증거물내의 양초성분을 분석할 때에는 양초의 낮은 휘발성으로 인해 석유계 탄화수소와 다른 전처리 조건이 필요한데, 양초관련 증거물을 <TEX>$150^{\circ}C$</TEX>에서 16시간을 활성탄조각과 두었을 때 양초 주요성분의 검출이 용이하였으며, 실제 화재증거물의 경우도 본 조건을 사용하였을 때 양초성분의 검출이 가능하였다.

Candle fires do not occur frequently, but can easily result in death. In this study, the thermal characteristics of candles and conditions and debris of candle fires were investigated to determine the causes of candle fires. The rates of decrease in weight of 10 candles were measured and found to be between 2.6 g/h and 6.7 g/h. Most candle fires are caused by the ignitiong of combustible materials close to them. The temperature near a candle ranges from about <TEX>$200^{\circ}C$</TEX> to <TEX>$400^{\circ}C$</TEX> at a distance of 1 cm and low ignition temperature materials such as papers can easily catch fire. The melting temperature of candles ranges between <TEX>$50^{\circ}C$</TEX> and <TEX>$70^{\circ}C$</TEX> and their major chemical components are fatty acids and normal hydrocarbons (over C20). Using pretreatment conditions involving the use of activated charcoal strips at <TEX>$150^{\circ}C$</TEX> for 16 hours, the fire debris including candle residues were analyzed using a Gas-chromatograph/Mass-spectrometer (GC/MS).
