A Study on the Necessity of Teaching Borrowed English Words to EFL Learners

  • 159

This study is focused on the necessity of teaching borrowed English words in education. There are so many loaned English words in the Korean vocabulary. Unfortunately, many of them have not been expressed in the correct way. In other words one cannot communicate with native English speakers using loaned English words because there are some discrepancies between the Korean English and their own meaning when expressed in English speaking countries. In this study the survey centered on 75 junior students majoring in Robotics and Digital Contents Department in Polytechnic college Ⅳ. The students were selected from three different levels of English classes. They wrote down and handed in the questionnaire with 35 loaned English words. The questionnaire included three types of questions: 1) whether they exactly knew the borrowed English words. 2) If they did, whether they knew the correct expression for each borrowed word. 3) How they came to know them. The result showed that a small number of the students considered the borrowed English word as incorrectly expressed. While some appeared to know the correct expression, some students did not. Furthermore, the students didn’t know exactly where they learnt the expressions.
