“Traitors of the Fascist Patria, Believers of Another Patria”: Carlo Rosselli and Patriotism

이 글에서는 이탈리아 반파시즘의 주역이자 자유주의적 사회주의의 이론가인 카를로 로셀리(Carlo Rosselli, 1899-1937)의 애국심을 고찰한다. 로셀리는 리소르지멘토로 거슬러 올라가는 가문의 애국적 전통과 마치니 이념의 영향 아래 자유의 방법으로 사회주의를 쇄신하려는 과정에서 프롤레타리아 국제주의에 맞서 애국적 의제를 진지하게 제기했다. 그에게 조국은 종족적·문화적 유대와 무관한 보편적 가치의 표현이었다. 파시스트 조국의 반역자이자 또 다른 조국의 숭배자로 자처하면서 로셀리는 이탈리아 반파시스트 혁명을 애국적 의무로 간주하고, 이 의무를 무엇보다 지식인과 노동자 계급의 열정적 소수에게 부과했다. 나아가 그는 히틀러의 등장과 에티오피아 전쟁, 에스파냐 내전 등 이탈리아와 유럽 정세의 숨 가쁜 변화를 지켜보면서, 파시즘을 유럽적 현상으로 파악하고 유럽적 차원의 반파시스트 투쟁을 강조하며 반국가주의의 전망에 열려 있는 유럽 연방주의의 이념을 제시했다. 그는 자신의 연방주의적이고 심지어 반국가주의적인 이념을 애국적 리소르지멘토의 연속 으로 보았지만, 그런 이념은 의미심장한 관점의 이동을 보여준다. 사실로 말하자면, 로셀리는 이탈리아 자유주의 전통을 계승하면서도 자유주의가 그 엘리트주의적 함의에도 불구하고 얼마나 급진적이고 혁명적일 수 있는지를 보여줌으로써 자유주의의 한계를 실험한 지식인으로 묘사될 수 있다.

This essay looks into the patriotism of Carlo Rosselli, a protagonist of Italian antifascism and a theorist of liberal socialism. Influenced by patriotic family traditions and Mazzini’s ideas, Rosselli took patriotic agenda seriously against proletarian internationalism in the process of renewing socialism by liberal method. For him, the patria was an expression of the essential values independently of ethnic and cultural ties. As a traitor of the fascist patria and a believer of another Italy, Rosselli asserted that Italian antifascist revolution was a patriotic duty and imposed it on the active minorities of intellectuals and working classes. Furthermore, in the middle of Hitler’s rising, Ethiopian war and Spanish civil war, he considered fascism as an European phenomenon, emphasized the European dimension of antifascist struggle, and consequently suggested the ideas of European federalism open to the antistatist vision. Though he regarded his federalist and even antistatist ideas as a continuation of the patriotic Risorgimento, they represented a significant change in his point of view. As a matter of fact, Rosselli, an heir of Italian liberal tradition, can be illustrated as an intellectual who pushed liberalism to the limits demonstrating how it could be radical and revolutionary with all the elitist implications.
