Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Mendelsohn maneuver training on swallowing function and quality of life in chronic stroke patients with dysphagia. Method: Sixteen chronic stroke patients with dysphagia participated in this study. All subjects were randomly divided into two groups; experimental group(n=8) and control group(n=8). Both group received traditional dysphagia therapy during 30 min/days for 8 weeks. Experimental group was performed Mendelsohn maneuver for 30 min per each session, and control group was performed traditional dysphagia therapy. Swallowing function test(SFT) was used to measure swallowing function and Functional Oral Intake Scale(FOIS) was used to evaluate dietary level. The quality of life was assessed swallowing quality of life(SWAL-QOL). Measurements were evaluated before, 4 and 8 weeks after intervention. Results: There was significant improvement over time in the SFT, FOIS, and SWAL-QOL in both groups(p<.05). There was no statistically significant difference between groups in the experimental group(p>.05), although there was a improvement of scores in swallowing function, dietary level, and quality of life over the control group. Conclusion: Mendelsohn maneuver training may be effective in improvements of swallowing and quality of life in stroke patients with dysphagia.
