The Birth of the Individual and Christianity

한국 사회는 급격히 변화하고 있다. 1인 가구의 급증, 만혼과 독신의 증가, 출산율의 감소 및 고령화의 급속한 진행 등 인구구조의 변화와 함께 페미니즘 열풍 등 사회적 변화가 불어 닥치고 있다. 이러한 모든 징후는 우리 사회에 개인이 등장하고 있음을 말해주는 것이다. 개인의 등장은 시민사회의 등장과 이에 따른 산업혁명으로 촉발된 인류의 비약적인 발전의 원동력이다. 역사적으로 개인이 등장하게 된 배경에는 기독교 신앙이 자리 잡고 있다. 기독교 신앙은 농업사회의 집단성에서 파생된 제국주의적 폭력에서 신 앞에선 인간으로서의 개인을 강조하였다. 예수님은 인류의 역사에서 처음으로 개인의 존엄성과 가치를 신 앞으로 이끌어 내셨다. 바울의 지중해 세계 선교는 이와 같은 기독교적 가치를 서구문명으로 접목시켰고 이는 훗날 종교개혁을 거쳐 시민사회의 등장과 국민국가의 태동 등 근대사회를 탄생시킨 원동력이 되었다. 이제 한국 사회는 그동안 경제 성장 과정에서 잊혀진 개인의 자율성과 창의성을 다시 찾음으로써 개인과 집단의 건강한 균형을 다시 회복해야 할 때이다.

Korean society is changing rapidly. Demographic changes such as the fast rise of one-member household, increase in late marriage and singleness, decrease in birthrate, rapidly developing aging phenomenon are taking place together with the social changes such as the feminism fever. All these symptoms tell us that the individual is rising in Korean society. The rising of the individual is the main driving force behind the rapid development of human society triggered by the advance of civil society and the consequential outbreak of industrial revolution. History witnesses that the background behind the rising of the individual is Christianity. Christianity emphasizes a human being in front of God from the imperialistic violence originated from the collectivism of agricultural society. Jesus, for the first time in human history, brought the dignity and value of the individual in front of God. Paul’s missionary work in the Mediterranean world linked such Christian value to the western civilization which became the impetus of modern society such as the rising of civil society and the development of nation state via the Reformation. Now is the time for the Korean society to re-balance the healthy equilibrium between the individual and the group by revisiting autonomy and creativity of the individual that were forgotten behind the shadow of rapid economic growth.
