The Fourth Industrial Revolution and Work -In the Viewpoint of Catholic Social Teaching

본고는 제4차 산업혁명과 그것의 영향으로 야기되는 노동의 위기라는 문제에 대해 가톨릭교회의 사회적 가르침의 관점에서 성찰하고 대안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 오늘날 제4차 산업혁명은 여러 측면에서 우리 사회에 영향을 끼치겠지만 특별히 일자리를 급속도로 감소시킬 것으로 전망된다. 이러한 노동의 위기에 직면하여, 이 연구는 가톨릭 사회 교리의 관점에서 노동의 의미를 재구성하고 그 의미를 실현할 수 있도록 근본적이고도 창의적인 대안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 우선 제4차 산업혁명이 야기할 노동의 위기를 재검토하고 동시에 과학기술의 진보라는 맥락에서 노동의 변화를 분석한다. 이를 통해 오늘날의 고용 노동이 산업혁명 이후 산업사회의 산물임을 밝힐 것이다. 더 나아가 이 연구는 가톨릭의 사회적 가르침의 관점에서 노동의 의미를 재구성한다. 특별히 요한 바오로 2세의 인격주의적 인간학과 그의 회칙 「노동하는 인간」을 분석하여, 노동은 행위와 존재의 주체로서 인간을 완성시키며, 공동체를 건설하며, 초월적이고 영성적인 의미를 지니고 있음을 밝힌다. 그럼으로써 노동의 가치와 존엄이 자본과 기술 등으로 표현되는 노동의 객관적인 측면보다는 노동을 수행하는 인간에게서 나오는 것임을 논증할 것이다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 이 연구는 노동의 가치와 존엄을 실현하기 위해 노동의 외연을 확장하고 사회적으로 재조직하여 재분배하고, 동시에 노동의 결과-자본과 기술의 성과-를 사회적으로 재분배할 것을 제안할 것이다. 이를 통해 과학기술의 발전의 성과가 어떻게 더욱 인간적이고 윤리적인 사회를 건설할 수 있을지에 대한 전망을 주리라 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the problem of the fourth industrial revolution and, as its effect, the crisis of work in the viewpoint of Catholic Social Teaching, and to seek alternative proposal. Today the fourth industrial revolution will affect our society in some dimensions, especially will reduce rapidly employments. In face of this crisis, this study will reconstruct the meaning of work in the viewpoint of Catholic social teaching and seek a fundamental and creative alternative in order to realize its meaning. For this purpose, I will examine the fourth industrial revolution and the crisis of work and analyze the change of work in the context of scientific and technological progress. Through this analysis, this study proves that paid work was a product of modern industrial society after the industrial revolution. Furthermore this study reconstructs the meaning of work in the viewpoint of Catholic social teaching. Analyzing especially the personalistic anthropology of Pope John Paul II and his social encyclical Laborem Exercens this study makes clear that the human work fulfills human person as the subject of his own actions and beings, establishes community, and has a transcendental and spiritual significance. For this reason, the value and dignity of work derives from more persons doing work than the objective meaning of work expressed in capital or technology. On the basis of this discussion, this study proposes that in order to realize the meanings of work the work needs to be extended, reorganized, and redistributed, and at the same time the products of work including the results of capital and technology needs to be socially redistributed. Through this, I expect to offer an perspective on the making a more ethical and humane society upon the achievement of scientific and technological progress.
