강원도 선사시대 동굴유적 조사의 전개와 성격

The development and character of the research of prehistoric cave sites in Gangwon Province

강원도에서 지금까지 체계적으로 발굴 조사된 선사시대의 동굴유적은 모두 6곳이며 이들은 모두 2000년대 이후에 조사 연구가 시작되었다. 유적은 구석기시대의 동굴 2 곳(쌍굴, 연이굴), 신석기시대의 동굴 2 곳(공기2굴, 꽃 병굴) 그리고 구석기시대부터 신석기⋅청동기시대까지 계속되는 동굴 2 곳 (피난굴, 매둔굴)으로 이루어진다. 이들 각 유적들의 위치, 크기, 특징, 경관 고고학(Tophography)상의 해석을 통해 전체적인 강원도 지역의 동굴유적의 특징을 고찰하여 보았다. 유적들은 일반으로 해발고도가 200m 이상 되는 곳에 위치하고 있으며 특히 연이굴은 740m의 높이에 자리한다. 굴의 규모는 대체로 작은 편이며 이 가운데 매둔동굴이 다소 큰 편이다. 출토유물의 많은 비율은 동물화석이지만 석기들도 확인되고 있으며 전체적의 총발견 유물의 량은 적은 편이다. 이러한 강원도 지역의 동굴유적들은 대체로 후기 갱신세의 늦은 시기 (MIS 3,2기) 또는 현세(MIS1기)에 점유된 유적들이 대부분이다. 각 유적들의 연대측정 자료뿐만 아니라 이 지역에서 출토된 동물들의 양상이 이를 뒷받 침하여주고 있다. 이것은 이지역에서의 사람들의 점유가 구석기시대의 늦은 시기이후에 이루어졌음을 보여주는 것으로 역시 지형학적인 입지조건과 많은 연관이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 아직도 강원도의 석회암지대에는 조사되지 않은 동굴들이 많다. 그러므로 앞으로 이 강원도 지역에서 종합적이고 체계적인 동굴유적의 연구와 고고학적 분석이 이루어지기를 기대한다. 이러한 작업이 이루어질 때 더욱 이 지역의 선사시대의 동굴유적의 특징과 성격이 명확하게 드러날 것이다.

There are six prehistoric cave sites in Gangwon Province that have been systematically excavated, all of which began to be excavated after the 2000s. The Cave sites include two caves in the Paleolithic period (Ssanggul, Yeon-igul), two caves in the Neolithic period (Gonggi2gul, Kkotbyeonggul) and two caves (Pinangul, Maedungul) from the Paleolithic to Bronze Age. The location, size, and topography interpretations of each of these sites were used to examine the overall characteristics of the cave sites in Gangwon Province. The sites are generally located at an altitude of more than 200 meters above sea level, especially at a height of 740 meters at Yeon-igul. The scales of cave are generally small, and the Maedungul, among them, is rather large. Most of excavated remains are animal fossils and a small number of stone tools are also identified. Most of these cave sites in Gangwon Province are largely occupied in the late period of the Pleistocene (MIS 3,2 period) or the Holocene (MIS 1 period). This is supported by not only dating data of each cave, but also compositions of animals excavated in this area. This shows that the occupation of people in this area took place after the late period of the Paleolithic period, and it was also found to be highly related to geographical location conditions. There are still many unexcavated caves in the limestone areas of Gangwon Province. Therefore, it needs the comprehensive and systematic excavations of these cave sites and archeological analysis will be conducted in the future. When this work is done, the character of the prehistoric cave sites of this area will become clear.
