A Study on Korean College Students’ Awareness in the Passive Voice

A Study on Korean College Students’ Awareness in the Passive Voice

  • 44

This study aims to investigate Korean students’ syntactic knowledge and their awareness of the passive over the active voice. A total of 44 Korean college students and 4 native speakers of English participated in the research. Findings revealed that Korean students considered the passive and the active possess the same meanings while native speakers of English responded that both structures have different meanings. It is partly because some of grammar textbooks students study with do not provide proper explanations and contexts; therefore the publishers should pay attention to the contents of their books. Since EFL students do not have such intuition, proper grammar explanations in context should be provided with the help of correct translation. The implication of the study discusses the importance of explicit, correct grammar instructions in English classes in order to build awareness in the passive voice.
