How to Make the Most of Peritexts for the Globalization of Korean Literature-A Comparative Case Study of Translations and Non-translations

  • 217

Korean literature has gained more visibility in global markets thanks in part to the efforts of organizations such as Literature Translation Institute of Korea and The Daesan Foundation. As part of their efforts to globalize the Korean literature, the two organizations even give awards to remarkable translations. In the process of evaluating and promoting the translations of Korean literary works, however, they pay little attention to paratexts that surround the translations. Paratexts are critical in that they can influence the reception of a translation and strengthen the status of an author and a translator at a local market. Despite such critical functions, how to compose the paratext has not been rigorously discussed in translation studies in Korea. Therefore, this study looks into the compositions of peritexts of translations, which are one of the main subcategories of paratexts, and compares them with those of non-translations. The investigation result reveals that peritexts of the translations are not meticulously prepared compared to those of non-translations that are successfully received in local markets. In short, peritexts of translations should be more thoroughly composed so that the hard works for the globalization of Korean literature can finally pay off.
