현재까지 ‘자비’의 연구 영역에서 주목할 만한 신학적 분석은 발터 카스퍼의 작업이 유일한 것으로 판단된다. 그는 2012년에 출간한 자신의 책에서 우리 시대 화두로 떠오른 ‘자비’라는 주제가 오랜 세월 무책임하게 경시되어온 원인을 하느님 존재에 대한 신학의 일방적인 형이상학적 본질 규명으로 분석했다. ‘자비’는 이러한 사변적 작업이 아니라 성경을 통해 전달되는 하느님의 역사적 자기 계시 안에서 중심 위치로 파악된다. 그러므로 어떤 의미에서 신학은 이 가장 기본적인 토대를 부정하지는 않았지만, 그 일방적인 방향 추구로 인해 의도치 않게 인간의 구체적인 삶과 분리된 하느님을 계속해서 부각해온 셈이다. 발터 카스퍼의 신학적 분석은 우리 시대 자비의 영성을 살아가고 그것을 해석하여 교회의 유산으로 남겨준 대표적인 인물 성 요한 바오로 2세의 근원적인 체험의 맥락으로 증명된다. 그에게 ‘자비’라는 가치가 깊이 뿌리를 내리게 된 것은 사변적인 숙고를 통해서가 아니라 철저히 실존적인 체험의 영역을 통해서이다. 1920년-1989년 고국 폴란드가 나치와 공산정권으로부터 억압당하던 격동의 시기 한가운데서 악의 실재, 악의 이데올로기의 가공할 힘에 맞서 저항하고 살아남아야했던 그에게 ‘자비’는 유일하게 의탁할 수 있는 하느님 존재의 중심점이 되었다. 이는 마치 성경 계시의 중심 열쇠가 우리 시대 구체적인 한 인간의 삶 안으로 되살아 난 것과 이상의 줄거리에서 확인되는 바 아직 초기 단계에 머물러 있는 자비의 영성의 연구가 그 출발점에서 고려해야할 요소들은 다음과 같다. ‘자비’는 성경을 토대로 그 고유한 구조와 원리, 법칙이 파악되어야 한다. 그리고 그것은 악의 최종적인 승리를 저지하는 하느님의 힘이라는 틀 안에서 명확히 드러난다. 현재로서는 요한 바오로 2세의 삶과 신학 안에서 보이는 ‘자비’가 가장 힘 있는 증언이 될 것이다.

Until now, the only study on the ‘mercy’ that deserves one’s attention in theological analysis is the work of Cardinal Walter Kasper. The book he published in 2012 analyzed that the ‘mercy’ the hot topic of the times has been neglected because of one-sided metaphysical substance investigation on existence of God. But the ‘mercy’ is understood not as the speculative work but as the main theme in God’s historical self-revelation through the scriptures. Therefore, although the theology on the mercy does not deny the basic foundation, the one-way direct pursuit unintentionally causes the separation God from the real human life. The theological analysis of Cardinal Walter Casper proves itself in the original experiences of St. John Paul II who lived the mercy of the times, interpreted and left it as the heritage of the church. The ‘mercy’ deeply rooted in him not by the speculative thought but by the thorough existential experiences. From 1920 to 1989, Poland his homeland was in the chaotic center of Nazi and Communism. The ‘mercy’ was the only reliance of God’s existence in which he resisted and survived against the power of evil and its ideology. It is like the main key in the scriptural revelation embodied in the real life of one man in our times. So the study on the spirituality of mercy in the beginning stage requires considering some elements in the starting point which follows. The original structure, principle, and rule of the ‘mercy’ needs to be understood through the scriptures which definitely reveals the power of God over evil’s final victory. At the present time, the ‘mercy’ through the life and theology of St. John Paul II is the most powerful witness.
