학습자 중심의 교양영어 발전방안: 전공계열별 요구분석을 중심으로

A Study on Developing Learner-centered College English Curriculum: Based on Needs Analysis of Students Across Majors

본 연구는 더욱 내실 있는 영어교육을 제공하고자 교육의 직접적인 이해당사자인 학습자들의 요구를 설문조사를 통하여 알아보았다. 무기명으로 조사된 설문조사에 인문사회계열, 이공계열, 예체능계열의 필수교양영어 수강생들이 참여하였고, 총 334 부의 설문지가 본 연구의 분석에 사용되었다. 설문조사를 통해 도출된 자료는 기술 통계, 일원분산분석, 다중회귀분석을 통해 처리되었고 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이공계열은 말하기 영역과 직무에 필요한 영어가 가장 필요하다고 응답하였고, 인문사회계열과 예체능계열은 모두 말하기 영역과 일상생활 영어를 가장 배우고 싶다고 응답하였다. 또한, 연구가 수행된 학교에 우수학생프로그램이 도입되면 참여할 의향이 있는지 알아보기 위하여 다중회귀분석을 시행한 결과 영어에 대한 필요도와 흥미도가 높으면 참여 의사에 유의한 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며 설명 력은 6.9%였다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 인구 감소시대에 직면한 대학들이 경쟁력을 강화할 수 있는 교양영어의 발전 방향에 대해 논의하였다.

This study surveyed the needs of learners, direct stakeholders of education, to offer quality English education and to establish an enriched academic environment. A total of 334 questionnaires were used for the analysis, with the participation of students from the departments of science and engineering, humanities and social science, and arts and physical education. The responses derived from the questionnaire were processed through descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis and the data analysis yielded the following results: First, descriptive statistics indicated that the most needed skills for science and engineering students was English speaking and English for work or job purposes; whereas for the Humanities and Social Science and Art and Physical Education Groups, English speaking skills, and everyday colloquial English were most needed areas. In addition, using multiple regression analysis, it was revealed that the higher the need and interest in English, the more positive effect on the engagement in Honors Student Programs and the explanatory power was 6.9%. Based on the research findings, this study argued on the development direction of college English classes to enhance the competitiveness of universities as they face with the era of the demographic crisis.
