This paper aims to investigate the difference of Korean negative polarity items as L1 and L2. Three groups of foreign students and preschool children participated in the experiment. The findings showed that in both LI and L2 studies, the participants produced more NPI responses in the object position than in the subject position. The difference between these two, however, was statistically significant. In L1 study, the difference between subject position and object position was not significant whereas the reponses were significantly different in L2 study. In sum, the L2 learners were probably affected by English NPIs. English NPIs manifest no subject/object symmetry. The L1 learners might have acquired it inherently or learned from their own experience as they got older.
