학령 전 아동의 디지털기기 사용 정도에 따른 언어표현과 사용역(language register) 특성

Varying Language Register and Expression according to the Use Degree of Digital instruments of Korean Preschool children

본 연구에서는 학령 전 아동의 디지털기기 사용 시간에 따른 언어표현과 언어사용역을 살펴보았다. 3∼5세 부모 40명을 대상으로 설문지를 작성하게 하여 분류한 디지털기기 고사용 집단 13명과 저사용 집단 13명씩, 총 26명의 아동을 대상으로, 사진으로 제시되는세 명(성인, 또래, 아기)의 대화상대방 각각에 대한 스크립트 과제를 수행하게 하였고, 산출과 해석과제를 포함한 언어사용역을 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 스크립트 과제의 내러티브 적절성과 서로다른낱말수에서는 두 집단 간 차이가 없었지만, 형태소로 살펴본 평균발화길이에서 사진 속 대화 상대가 또래와 아기일 때 고사용 집단 아동들이 더 짧은 발화로 말하였고, 이러한 차이는 통계적으로도 유의미하였다. 둘째, 산출과제에서 고사용 집단 아동들이 할머니에게 하는 질문일 때 정중한 표현을 더 적게 말하였으며 이러한 차이 역시 통계적으로 유의하였다. 마지막으로, 해석 과제에서는 두 집단 간 수행 차이가 없었다. 디지털기기 고사용 집단 아동들은 유사한 어휘력 수준임에도 가상의 사진 속 특정 대화 상대에게 말할 때 발화 길이가 짧았으며, 성인에게 말할 때 정중한 표현을 하는데 약간의 제한이 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이러한 차이는 공식 검사에 더해 사용역을 포함한 역동적 평가가 이들의 언어력 검사에 적용될 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Digital devices exposure plays an increasing role in the lives of young children. The purpose of this study is to find out how much young children’s use of digital devices affects their language register and pragmatic ability. Twenty Six parents of 3∼5 ages participated in the survey and their children participated in the register study also. We classified the chosen children into low-use group and high-use group based on the total use hours of digital devices. Participants were asked to explain the process of going to a restaurant to a series of listeners who varied in linguistic competence. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were not significant group differences in narrative adequacy and NDW. But high-use group spontaneously simplified their language based on listeners such as the peer and the baby. Second, significant differences for different listeners were found on high-use group by syntactic directiveness. Lastly, there were not significant group differences in the comprehension task. These findings suggest that language expression and register limitation in young children are associated with relatively over use of digital devices. The dynamic assessment such as language register are considered useful for assessing the language ability of young children.
