글로벌 코리아 외국인 장학생을 위한 한국 문화 체험 프로그램 사례 연구

A Study on the Korean Cultural Program for Foreign Students under Global Korea Scholarship

본 연구는 해외 거주 외국인 대학생을 대상으로 교육부가 지원해 오고 있는 글로벌 코리아 장학생을 위한 한국 문화 체험 프로그램에 대한 사례 연구이다. 국제적으로 한국과 한국 문화에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 교육부는 국가적 차원에서 전략적 주요 국가를 선정하고 그 나라의 대학생을 초청하여 한국어와 한국 문화를 체험하는 프로그램을 제공해 오고 있다. 본 연구에서는 교육부의 위탁을 받은 서울의 한 대학에서 30명의 글로벌 코리아 외국인 장학생들에게 한국 문화 체험 프로그램을 제공한 후 내용과 참여에 대한 만족도를 조사하였다. 참여자들의 만족도를 파악하기 위해 설문조사를 실시하여 정량적으로 분석하였고, 면담을 시행해 문화 프로그램에 대한 반응을 분석하였다. 또한, 조력자로 참석한 7명의 한국인 대학생 포커스 그룹인 서포터들에게 심층 면담을 시행하였다. 연구결과 참여자들의 프로그램에 대한 만족도가 상당히 높았고 특히 팀별로 준비한 문화 프로젝트를 통해 한국 문화뿐만 아니라 참여자들의 상호문화에 관한 관심과 생각이 긍정적으로 변화되는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 단기간의 외국인 문화 체험 프로그램을 시행할 경우 프로젝트 활동을 통해 학생들의 참여 동기를 높이면서 실질적인 한국어 학습으로 확장될 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주었다. 다른 한편으로 앞으로 외국인을 위한 문화 체험 프로그램에 한국어 언어 사용의 활용도가 높은 문화 활동 프로젝트와 교육 활동이 필요하다는 것을 시사해주고 있다.

This study describes the general contour of the cultural program for foreign students who were selected for the Global Korean Scholarship (GKS) in Korea. 30 GKS participants from 26 different countries were invited to participate in the Korean cultural program for 11 days at a university in Seoul. In the program, the participants were divided into different groups. They were assigned a cultural project and given a Korean supporter’ assistance. The seven Korean supporters in each group played a significant role in facilitating the foreign students’ improved understanding of the Korean language and culture. A questionnaire was administrated to evaluate the students’ satisfaction and responses towards the program in general and the cultural project in particular. For further research, the researchers interviewed the participants and the Korean supporters about the program. The results revealed positive responses to the cultural program and the team project. The participants developed some degree of inter-cultural awareness, introducing their own language and culture and respecting each country’s culture during the team projects. This study implies that a cultural program for invited foreign students should include the active use of the Korean language on the basis of inter-cultural communication.
