This paper examines the position of Zainichi writers and their literature among Japanese literature and the literary world. Lee Hoesung(李恢成), a Zainichi writer, won the Akutagawa Prize in 1971 for Kinutawo utsu onna(砧をうつ女). This novel shows the traditional I-novel style of modern Japanese literature. Such an approach was a literary method of finding the self among “The Introverted Generation”, which formed the mainstream of literary society around 1970. The Akutagawa Prize was awarded to Kinutawo utsu onna because it adopted a method of finding the self, which was appreciated by the panel of judges of the Akutagawa Prize. That method in this novel was shaped as a process of trying to come into contact with one’s mother tongue. At the end of this novel, the mother tongue as something that could be considered Japanese but could also be Korean, and therefore not Japanese or Korean, was written in the words of the mother who says “Don’t get carried away (流されないで).” This remark is not a sense of identity as Zainichi, but rather a symbol of the position of the Zainichi, which fluctuates constantly.
