강원도 말갈과 고구려의 南進

Mòhé(靺鞨) in Gangwon-do province and the southward advance of Goguryeo

말갈은 한국 고대사에 있어 중요한 존재인 만큼, 그동안 많은 연구가 진행되었지만 그 실체에 대해서는 異見이 많다. 지난 수십 년간의 연구에도 불구하고 다양한 견해들이 나온 이유로는 말갈 관련 기록의 소략, 문헌사학과 고고학간의 괴리, 관련 기록이 여러 문헌에서 산발적으로 파악되는 양상 등을 꼽을 수 있다. ‘가야’를 비롯해 소위 ‘영산강세력’ 등 『三國史記』에 단편적으로 등장하는 여타 정치체와 마찬가지로 말갈 역시 자체 기록을 남기지 못했지만, 三國과 관련하여 문헌에 등장하는 빈도수는 압도적으로 많다. 하지만 말갈의 존재를 증명해줄만한 뚜렷한 고고자료는 확인되지 않고 있는데, 이는 기록의 부재를 고고자료가 충분히 메워주고 있는 가야·영산강세력과 가장 큰 차이점이라고 할 수 있다. 그밖에 말갈의 실체를 파악하는 데에 혼선을 주는 요인으로는 여러 문헌에 말갈의 단편적인 흔적들이 산발적으로 흩어져 있기 때문이다. 본고에서는 먼저 말갈 관련 문헌기사를 통해 말갈의 특징을 짚어낸 뒤 이를 지역별로 구분하였다. 다음으로 4세기 후반 이후 고구려의 南進 결과 ‘당연히’ 고구려의 영토로 인식되어 온 ‘강원도’ 지역의 말갈에 대해서 살펴보았다. 황해·경기도 지역의 말갈이 백제 건국 초부터 相爭을 거듭했던 것과 달리 강원도 지역의 말갈은 처음부터 고구려에 귀속되어 고구려 멸망기까지 행동을 같이 하고 있어 주목된다. 이에 강원도 지역에서 확인되는 고고자료를 면밀히 검토하여 기존의 말갈 인식을 재검토하고 ‘강원도 말갈’의 정체성 및 고구려와의 遭遇 이후 말갈 사회의 변화 등에 대해 간략하게 살펴보았다.

There have been many researches conducted on Mòhé(靺鞨) that is considered as one of significant powers in Korean history. Despite several years of researches, there have been different opinions. The reasons for that are inattentiveness of record regarding Mòhé, disjunction between literature and archaeology and sporadic records in various literatures. Mòhé do not have their own records in literatures. There were, however, many records related to Three Kingdoms. Unfortunately there have not been obvious archaeological evidences of Mòhé unlike Gaya and so-called Yeongsangang power that have enough archaeological materials to compensate the absence of literature. On this study, I identified the features of Mòhé first through literatures and divided them by regions thereafter. Next I examined Mòhé in ‘Gangwon-do Province’ that considered as ‘obvious’ territory of Goguryeo after its southward expansion in the 4th century. It is very remarkable that Mòhé in Gangwon-do Province belonged to Goguryeo from the first and joined in with Goguryeo until its fall. This movement was very different from Mòhé in Hwanghae-do and Gyeonggi-do Provinces that kept fighting with Baekje from its birth. Accordingly, I reconsidered existing understanding of Mòhé by checking archaeological materials in Gangwon-do Province and briefly examined the identity of ‘Mòhé people in Gangwon-do Province’ and changes of Mòhé society after southward expansion of Goguryeo.
