김윤식의 『김동인 연구』가 놓인 자리

이 논문은 김윤식의 저서 『김동인 연구』(1987)의 특징을 살펴보고, 나아가 이 책이 한국근대문학연구사상 갖는 의미를 살펴보고자 하는 글이다. 『김동인 연구』는 문학평전으로서 현대문학연구사에서 특별한 위치를 차지한다. 그것은 이 저서가, 기왕의 역사주의적 전기연구와는 달리 문학적 패턴을 통해 작가의 삶의 패턴을 읽어내고 해석하려 한 종합적인 문학 전기를 겨냥했기 때문이다. 김윤식의 이런 작업은 미국의 문학전기 작가 레온 에델의 저서에 많은 빚을 지고 있다. 직접 레온 에델의 책을 번역하기도 했던 김윤식은, 레온 에델이 문학 전기의 방법론으로 제시한 중요한 시각과 해석의 방법론을 자기화하여 역사적 접근과 정신분석적 접근, 그리고 구조주의적 접근 등을 모두 동원한 총체적인 작가론을 시도하였는데, 『이광수와 그의 시대』, 『염상섭 연구』가 그 구체적인 성과물들이다. 그중에서도 『김동인 연구』는 한국근대작가의 탄생의 비밀을 미학적 차원과 전기적 차원을 균형 있게 연결하여 김동인의 문학적 생애를 총체적으로 복원한 문학평전이라고 평가할 수 있다. 김윤식의 평전작업은 전후 분단이데올로기하에서 역사적 연구와 미학적 연구가 분리되는 바람에 왜곡된 한국 현대문학연구를 인문학적 연구로 종합 지양하였다는 점에서도 일정한 의미를 갖는다. 결국, 그의 문학평전 작업은 문학연구의 본령이 무엇인가를 다시금 일깨워주었다는 점에서 연구사적으로 의미 있는 작업이었던 것이다.

This paper examines the characteristics of A Study on Kim Dong-In by Kim Yoon-shik and and explores the significance of this book in the field of the Korean modern literature research. As a literary biography A Study on Kim Dong-In has a special place in the history of the modern Korean literature research. This is because this book aimed at a comprehensive literary biography that attempted to read and interpret the patterns of life of the artist through literary patterns, unlike many historical approaches to a writer. This book of Kim Dong-In’s literary lworks and owes much to the writings of American literary biographer Leon Edel. Kim Yoon-shik, who also translated Leon Edel s book directly, has developed a holistic theory of art that uses both historical approach, psychoanalytic approach, and structuralist approach, by magnetizing the method of critical vision and interpretation proposed by Leon Edel s methodology of literary biography. Like his writings as Lee Kwang-Soo and his age and A Study on Yeom Sang-Seop, A Study on Kim Dong-In can be evaluated as a successful restoration of Kim Dong-In s literary patterns which is based on his life history. So Kim Yoon-shik unfolded a secret of the birth of modern Korean writers in a balanced perspective of aesthetic dimension and biographical dimension.
