탈(脫)정치적 관점에서 고조선의 상업활동 탐색

Exploring Old Choson’s Commercial Activities from a De-political Perspective

본고는 고조선이 수행한 다양한 교류 활동 가운데 정치적 관점에서의 대외관계와 탈정치 활동으로서의 경제활동, 즉 대내외 상업활동을 분리해 보고자 시도했다. ‘영성한 문헌기록과 제한된 고고학 자료’라는 열악한 조건에도 불구하고 고조선의 교류관련 연구는 최근 몇 년간 가장 활발한 연구 분야로 부상했다. 여기에는 교류가 한 사회의 계층화를 촉진시켰고 궁극적으로 국가의 성립과 발전에 핵심적인 역할을 했다고 하는 정치적 관점이 작용했다. 이에 필자는 고조선의 교류사 연구가 ‘사회변동의 요인으로 보는 정치적 패러다임에서 ‘이윤 추구’라는 경제적 패러다임으로의 전환이 필요함을 제안했다. 고조선의 정치적 대외활동에 대해서는 ‘조(朝)’, ‘내속(來屬)’, ‘신속(臣屬)’, ‘복속(服屬)’, ‘후(侯)’, ‘칭왕(稱王)’, ‘외신(外臣)’, ‘약(約)’, ‘공번(貢蕃)’ 등 사료에 나오는 용어와 기존에 학계에 발표된 견해들을 점검하면서 살펴보았다. 경제적 상업활동은 ‘조회’, ‘약’과 같은 정치활동에 딸리는 ‘세폐(歲幣)’, ‘입공(入貢)’, ‘회사(回賜), ‘병위재물(兵威財物)’ 등의 공적 교역과 ‘관시(關市)’를 통한 민간교역의 형태가 있었을 것으로 추정했다. 거래된 물자에 대해서는 방언(方言) 과 설문해자(說文解字) 의 고조선 관련 기록에 나오는 특산품이 거래되었을 가능성이 높다고 보았다.

This paper attempted to distinguish between economic activities as commerce and foreign relations as politics from international contacting activities of Old Choson. Old Choson established various relations with ancient China such as Zhou 周, Qi 齊, Qin 秦, Yan 燕, Han 漢. And it interacted with nomadic groups. Sometimes Old Choson subjugated its neighboring polities. Many researchers payed attention to the relations which engaged in Old Choson. And they suggested that Old Choson could developed through interaction with outside world. But many studies vaguely dealt with international relations of Old Choson. In other words they did not distinguish commercial activity from diplomacy. Many studies have approached various relations from political perspectives without distinguishing between economic activities and political activities as diplomacy. In this paper I explored the exchange and trade activities of Old Choson from economic perspectives. Some historical records said there were movements to pioneer the markets between Old Choson and ancient China.
