3.1운동과 종교 간의 협력

March First Movement and the Inter-Religious Cooperation

이 글은 거대한 민족운동이자 한국 근현대사의 이정표라 할 수 있는 3.1운동이 성공적으로 가능하게 된 요인들 가운데 하나인 종교지도자들의 협력에 초점을 맞추었다. 특히 3.1만세운동을 성사시킨 3대 지도자 의암 손병희(천도교 3대 교주), 남강 이승훈(기독교 장로) 그리고 만해 한용운(불교개혁가)을 중심으로 이야기를 전개했다. 이들은 민족적 거사로서의 독립만세운동은 일원화(一元化), 대중화 (大衆化), 비폭력(非暴力)이라는 3대 원칙을 가지고 추진해야 한다는 일치된 공감을 가지고 있었다. 이를 위해 종단별 개별 행동을 자제하고 긴밀한 협의와 논의를 통하여 일을 하였다. 또한 각 종단의 가르침과 종지(宗旨)의 표현이 다르고 강조점이 다르더라도 도탄에 빠져 고통당하는 민족 생명을 살려내 정의, 평등, 자유, 박애가 실현된 세상을 만드는 데에 동의하고 있었다. 천도교의 보국안민, 사인여천(事人如天), 인내 천, 이신환성(以身換性), 기독교의 경천애인(敬天愛人), 인의(仁義), 불교의 만물동체(萬物同體), 전미개오(轉迷開悟), 보살도실천(菩薩 道實踐)이 그것이다. 아울러 3.1운동 과정이 성공적일 수 있었던 실질적 이유에는 손병희, 이승훈, 한용운 등 3대 종단을 대표한 세 사람의 인품과 거룩한 뜻도 있다. 이들은 3.1운동을 견인해갔던 실천적 신앙인이요 살신성인하는 인물들이다. 이같은 선인들의 고귀한 종교적 삶과 뜻에 비교해 볼 때 오늘을 살아가는 종교계와 그 지도자들은 배타적 종파 교리중심주의와 편협한 종파적 이기주의에 사로잡혀 있지 않은지 반성하게 된다.

This essay is an attempt to contemplate the motive and process of a close co-operation among Korean religions, especially between Chondokyo, Christianity, and Buddhism during the March First Movement in 1919. To considerate this great co-operation, this essay focused upon three representative religious leaders; Son-Pyonghui(the 3rd general leader of Chondokyo), Lee Sunghoon(Christian elder), and Han Yongun (Buddist reformer). To bring the Independent March Movement to a successful result, They united in one mind upon the three principle of the March Movement: popularization, unitarization and nonviolence. And also they have unshakable belief that Korea Independence is the clear command of heaven, the course of our time, a legitimate manifestation of the right of all nations. so that, nothing in the world can suppress or block it. Three religious leaders could be in cooperation with the conviction that The March First Movement for Korean Independence represents the demand of Korean people for justice, humanity, survival, and dignity. The March First movement of 1919 would not been successful had it not been for open mind to Truth itself and sacrificial spirituality beyond egocentric belief.
