The purpose of this study is to look at the features seen in Ukiyo-e, to understand traditional Japanese costumes, and then to develop new, contemporary fashion designs using both as sources of creative inspiration. As a research method, literature was first reviewed on the social and cultural background of the Edo period and the characteristics of Ukiyo-e and beauty paintings. Then, 108 works were selected for the study by extracting Ukiyo-e artwork from websites and books. The analysis showed that broad collar and rounded sleeves were used frequently, as were plant patterns and geometric patterns. Reds and yellows were the most common colors. Obi most commonly featured geometric patterns, and yellow and red colors were used to show similarities or contrasting colors with Gosode. Based on the theoretical study and analysis, the design concept was set as “Knot” and two clothing items were produced. They were presented as flat design sketches using Adobe Illustrator CC. The works were designed by reinterpreting the characteristics and traditional patterns of paintings in Ukiyo-e and offering a modern take on the shape of the obi.
