플라톤 대화편에 나타난 경이(thaumazein)의 교육적 의미

The Educational Meaning of Wonder(thaumazein) in the Dialogues of Plato

이 연구의 목적은 플라톤의 대화편에 나타난 경이(thaumazein)의 교육적 의미를 고찰하는데 있다. 『테아이테토스』에서 플라톤은 철학의 근원은 경이에 있다고 하였다. 철학의 시원(始原)이 경이에 있다면, 교육의 시원도 마찬가지일 것이다. 하지만 교육에서 경이의 모든 학문적 논의의 근원이 되는 플라톤의 경이(thaumazein)의 고찰은 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 경이의 교육적 의미에 대한 고찰에 앞서, 경이감에 관한 철학자들의 고찰의 기원이자 모든 학문 분야의 시원이 되는 플라톤의 경이에 대한 고찰이 선행되어야 할 것이다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발하여, 이 글에서는 교육적 관점에서 경이의 의미를 추론할 수 있는 대화편 『향연』, 『파이돈』, 『테아이테토스』, 『라케스』, 『메논』 등을 중심으로 경이의 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 플라톤의 대화편에서 나타난 경이는 교육과 학습의 입문, 즉 모든 앎의 시작이자 동시에 인성교육적 의미를 지님을 밝힌다. 플라톤과 경이, 그리고 교육에 대한 본 연구는 그동안 잊혀진 교육의 시원, 즉 경이에 대한 새로운 안목을 제시해줄 것이라 기대한다.

Where does philosophy originate? Plato said that the beginning of philosophy was in thaumazein in Theaitetos. If the origin of philosophy is in wonder, the spirit of education should be no different. However, there is no study on the educational significance of Plato s wonder, which is the source of this discussion on wonder in education, specifically, the philosophical discussion of wonder. The wonder that appears in Plato s dialogues is the origin of all other disciplines and the origin of the consideration by other philosophers regarding wonder. Therefore, before studying the educational significance and value of wonder in ideology or a specific educational field within the pedagogy, a consideration of Plato s wonder must precede it. Starting from this perspective, this article aimed to examine the educational significance of the wonders presented in Plato s dialogues. In order to do this, we first need to know wonder, specifically, the dialogues Phaedon, Theaitetos, Laches, Symposium and Menon. Then we will reveal the meaning of wonder, the process of knowing, and consider the human meaning of wonder. Thus, Plato s dialogues reveal that wonder is an introduction to education and the personality education. The educational meaning of wonder in Plato’s dialogues is expected to provide new insight into the source of forgotten education.
