芥川竜之介 오토미의 정조 論* - 육체적 정조를 넘어서 -

A Study on Otomi’s chastity by Ryunosuke Akutagawa - Beynond Physical Chastity -

本稿の主な狙いは、芥川&#31452;之介の中期短編、 お富の貞操の中心人物の お富が お上さん 寵愛の猫を救うために、乞食こと新公に 肌身を任せる &#30495; なる 動機を明らかにすることにある。確かに、その 動機は何だったのか というテクストの問いかけに、いくら答えを探してみてもその解答を導き出 すことは難しい という見解に否定しにくいところもある。しかしながら、 そう片付けてしまうには、題名の示唆する如く作中におけるお富の貞操の響 きが決して&#27973;くないのも事&#23455;である。そこで作者の意&#22259;した 動機の不明確 さとは裏腹に、テキスト&#20869;における曖昧な言&#35500;に&#20869;在してある意味あるいは 論理に近づく作業は、作品世界の深層を掘り下げるという側面からして無意味とは言えまい。その際、作中の 雨と 猫という、<貞操>への一種の小 道具を見逃すわけには行かない。作品世界の中核をなしている作品の前半部 において 猫は密室的空間の台所で各&#12293;お富と新公を挑&#30330;させる&#35013;置として &#20685;き掛けている。二つの巧みな&#20685;き掛けにより、新公の お前さんの&#20307;を借 りるぜ という要求に&#24540;じざるを得なくなった、お富にとってそれの &#24403;然す ぎるほど&#24403;然な 動機は、彼女自身の中に&#20307;化してある奉公先への忠誠、 忠情、忠節と言うべきではあるまいか。 お富の貞操における 貞操とは&#21336; なる性的で肉&#20307;的な純潔を越えた、精神的な貞操を意味するものとして受け 止めてよいであろう。さらにいえば、この作品はお富の貞操を通して、我ら 人間同志の各自の不確&#23455;な人生における &#24403;然すぎるほど&#24403;然な&#20307;化してあ る&#20385;値の如何なる&#27096;を問うているものと言えよう。

The present article investigates Otomis’ Chastity, a short literary work written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa during the middle period of his career. In this literary work, the protagonist, Otomi, “devotes herself” to the beggar, Shinkou. Our primary goal is to reveal Otomi’s true “motive” for her behavior. It would be an undeniable fact that the issue of “what the motive was” is hardly resolved. On the other hand, the issue seems to be worthy of inquiry, because Otomi’s chastity plays a crucial role in the story, as reflected in the title. Therefore, it would be a significant task to reveal the meaning or the logic of ambiguous statements in the text since it is expected to shed light on the deeper part of the story depicted in the literary work. For this purpose, what should not go unnoticed are “rain” and “cat,” which contribute to the concept of chastity portrayed in the story. In the former part of the work, “cat” serves as a device to stir up the emotions of Otomi and Shinkou, in the closed kitchen. Due to the device, it turns out that Otomi cannot resist the demand of Shinkou, who says “Let me borrow your body.” Otomi’s “too natural” “motive” is an embodiment of her loyalty to her master. The concept of “chastity” in the work goes beyond that of sexual purity and indicates mental purity. Moreover, this literary work, through the depicted concept of Otomi’s chastity, is said to raise the issue of “too natural” value embodied in the humans in their uncertain lives.
