<유광전>의 구성적 특징과 그 의미에 대한 연구

A Study on the Compositional Characteristics of Yugwangjeon and Its Meaning

<유광전>은 19세기 말에 창작된 것으로 추정되는 국문필사본 고소설이다. 두 종의 이본만이 전하고 있어, 유통은 활발하지 못했던 것으로 보인다. 기존 연구에서는 영웅소설적 유형, 여성의 애정 욕망, 정절과 같은 중세적 가치관 등을 주목하면서 <유광전>을 고찰한 바 있다. <유광전>은 순차적으로 (1) 유광이 老佛을 멸시하다가 저승으로 끌려간 후 다시 환생하는 내용, (2) 남성인물이 여장을 하여 다른 여성들과 접촉한 뒤 결국에는 혼인을 하는 내용, (3) 미색을 밝히는 남성인물이 가짜 선녀에게 속아 망신을 당하는 내용, (4) 주인공과 혼인한 한 여성이 겉으로는 정절을 중시하는 척하지만, 실제로는 성적 욕망을 과도하게 표출하다가 큰 수치를 당하는 내용 등으로 구성되어 있다. 이 중에서 (1)은 저승체험담을 수용한 것이고, (2)는 <구운몽>을 모방한 것이다. 그리고 (3)은 <구운몽>과 훼절소설을 혼성모방한 것이고, (4)는 훼절소설의 남성인물 자리에 여성인물을 대치하는 방법으로 <오유란전>, <배비장전>류의 남성 훼절소설을 패러디한 것이다. 그 외에, 유광이 세 여성과 결연하는 장면에서도 기존 소설의 패러디가 활용되었다. 이처럼 <유광전>은 설화, 야담, 고소설 등 기존 서사를 적극 활용하거나 모방 및 패러디하여 형성된 작품이다. 19세기 말 20세기 초에는 소설 창작에 있어 기존 서사를 활용하는 방식이 하나의 중요한 양상이자 관행이었다. <유광전> 역시 이러한 흐름 속에서 창작되었다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 우리는 <유광전>을 통해 고소설 창작의 한 양상과 경향을 재확인할 수 있다.

Yugwangjeon is a Korean manuscript of an ancient novel known to be created at the end of the 19th century. Since only the two different versions are handed down, the distribution seems to have been not very active. Yugwangjeon is a work that deals with the life of Yugwang. The story of Yugwang making significant contributions to the war is also included in the narrative. In previous studies, this work has been understood and valued from the perspective of heroic novel. However, elements of the heroic novel are not the essence of Yugwangjeon. Previous studies also found that this work raised the question of medieval values regarding women’s love, desire, and fidelity. This is not valid either. Yugwangjeon can be understood in a more meaningful work of literature in relation to the method of creation of ancient novels. Yugwangjeon can be summarized as the following: (1) the story of Yugwang’s contempt of the Buddha that makes him to be taken to the underworld and then being reincarnated, (2) a male figure disguising as a woman, tries to contact other women and eventually marries then, (3) a man obsessed with beautiful women being deceived by a fake fairy, (4) a woman who pretends to be devoted to her husband but turns out to be sexually abusive. Among these themes, (1) is a collection of stories about the underworld which is easily found in the existing narrative and (2) is a copy of a novel Guunmong. (3) is a hybrid copy of the novel Guunmong and the sexual corrupting typestory, and (4) uses the method of replacing female characters with the male characters in the original sexual corrupting typestories, parodying novels like Oyulanjeon or Baebijangjeon. In addition, a parody of existing novels was also found in the scene where Yugwang was marrying the three women. As such, Yugwangjeon is a work that utilizes existing stories such as tales, historical romance, Korean old novels, with using pastiche and parodies. By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, one can see that the use of existing narrative in creating novel was one of the important aspects and customs. Thus, this paper aims to reaffirm one aspect and practice of the creation of the novel Yugwangjeon.
