A Study On The Film <Parasite>: Impossibility of Coexistence Between Classes Reenacted by Tragic Comedy

본고는 계급성이 인간의 삶에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 섬세하지만 파격적으로 재현한 <기생충>의 영화적 존재 양상과 그것이 동시대인들에게 던지는 의미를 함께 고찰하는 데 목표를 둔다. 계급성은 봉준호 감독 영화의 근간을 가로지르는 주요한 문제 중 하나로 그는 다양한 방식으로 계급 문제를 재현해 왔다. 그런데 <기생충>은 리얼리즘에 기대어 동시대 한국인의 사적인 삶을 파고드는 방식으로 계급성을 노골적으로 파헤친다는 점에서 여타 봉준호 감독 영화와 차별성을 보인다. <기생충>은 반지하와 저택 그리고 지하실이라는 공간에 귀거하는 인물들을 통해 계급적 정황을 가시적으로 보여준다. 그중 기택과 근세 가족은 몰락한 중산층이자 소외된 노동자인 프레카리아트로 이들은 상류 계급인 박사장 저택에 기생하며 ‘충’의 삶을 살게 된다. 영화는 생각보다 젠틀한 상류 계급과 생존을 위해 체면과 윤리를 방기한 하류 계급의 양태를 대조적으로 보여줌과 동시에 계급성이 삶의 사소한 부분에까지 영향을 주는 상황을 목도하게 한다. 또한 생존에 내몰린 프레카리아트는 이타심이나 연대감을 가질 수 없다는 사실과 자본이 인간을 괴물로 만드는 정황을 선명하게 보여준다. <기생충>은 누구에게도 행복한 결말을 선사하지 않음으로써 계급 문제가 쉽게 해결될 수 없는 것임을 암시한다. 그러나 <기생충>은 한국 사회의 현실을 모사하는 동시에 ‘충’의 삶을 살아왔거나 살 수밖에 없었던 이들에게 경종을 울린다. 다시 말해 <기생충>은 계급적 패배감과 모멸감이 만연한 사회 그리고 생존을 위해 같은 계급을 겨냥하는 불운한 사회를 다시 한번 재고하게 한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the cinematic aspect of the film <Parasite> that reenacted how class affects human lives in an elaborate and unconventional manner and also the meaning that is conveyed to the contemporaries. Class is one of the important problems that is emphasized as the foundation of films by Director Bong Joon-ho, and he has reenacted the issue of class in various ways. However, the film <Parasite> displays distinction from other films directed by Director Bong Joon-Ho by the fact that it inclines on realism and plainly investigates the topic, class, in ways that penetrates into the personal lives of South Koreans in the same period. <Parasite> visually shows the circumstances of class through characters that live in different spaces like semi-basement, mansion, and basement. Amongst them, Ki-taek and Geun-se s families are the ruined middle class and precariat, neglected laborers in other words, and they are parasites in the mansion owned by Mr. Park, who is the upper class, and live as worms. The film contrastively displays the aspect of the upper class that is more gentle than expected and the lower class that gives up on reputation and ethics for survival. At the same time, it identifies situations where class even influences the trivial aspects of people s lives. Moreover, it clearly reveals the fact that altruism and solidarity are not fitting for precariats, who struggle to survive, and also situations where capital assets turn humans into monsters. The film <Parasite> does not present a happy ending to anyone, and implies that the problem of class cannot be easily solved. However, while <Parasite> expresses the reality of the society in South Korea, it alerts those who have lived the lives as worms or have no other choice but to live that kind of life. In conclusion, <Parasite> holds significance because it reconsiders the society, where a sense of defeat and humiliation from class are prevalent, and also an unfortunate society, where people target on those in the same class for survival.
