효당 최범술과 ‘한국차도회’에 대한 연구

A study on Hyodang Choi Beom-sul and the “Hankuk Chado-hoe”

효당 최범술은 일찍부터 차생활을 익혔고, 일제강점기에도 다솔사에서 차를 가꾸고 만들며 차생활을 영위했다. 1960년대 이후에는 우리 전통의 차문화를 발굴하고 교육하며, 차문화 운동을 전개하는 데 진력함으로써 많은 차인들을 길러내고 스러져 가던 차문화의 맥을 되살렸다. 현대 차문화의 중흥조로 그를 평가해도 큰 무리는 없을 것이다. 한편, 효당은 제자이자 부인이었던 채정복의 도움을 바탕으로 ‘한국차도회’를 결성했다. 이는 우리나라 최초의 전국단위 차 단체로, 이 단체의 탄생 이후 본격적으로 한국의 차문화 단체들이 나타나기 시작했다. 그 대표적인 단체가 한국차도회 창립 2년 후에 결성된 한국차인회라고 할 수 있으며, 이 단체가 만들어져 초의스님의 일지암이 복원되고 차의 날이 제정되면서 한국 현대 차문화 운동이 본격화 되었다고 할 수 있다. 이상의 내용을 바탕으로 효당의 차생활과 ‘한국차도회’의 의의를 정리해 보면 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 효당은 한국 현대 차문화의 중흥에 크게 기여한 인물이며, 최초의 차문화 종합 개론서라고 할 수 있는 『한국의 차도』 집필과 발간을 통해 차문화의 대중화를 이끌었다. 둘째, 효당이 주축이 되어 결성한 ‘한국차도회’는 우리나라 최초의 현대적인 전국단위 차문화 단체였다. 셋째, ‘한국차도회’가 ‘한국차인회’의 결성에 직접적으로 연결되는 것은 아니지만, 한국차인회의 결성에 한국차도회와 효당이 끼친 공적은 결코 작지 않았다. 이로써 효당의 차문화 보급 운동은 그가 길러내고 키워낸 여러 차인들을 통해 마침내 오늘에 이어지게 되었고, 한국차도회는 이런 흐름의 맨 앞자리에 놓이는 차문화 단체로 기억될 필요가 있다고 하겠다.

Hyodang(曉堂) Choi Beom-sul(崔凡述) has learned tea life since he was young. He also led tea life by cultivating and making teas in Dasolsa(多率寺) during the Japanese colonial era. Since the 1960s, Choi Beom-sul has worked hard to discover and educate traditional Korean tea culture. So he raised many tea masters. As a result, he revived the Korean tea culture that had been falling apart. Therefore, it is not too much to regard him as the man who promoted modern Korean tea culture. Meanwhile, Choi Beom-sul formed the “Hankuk Chado-hoe(韓國茶道會)” based on the help of Chae Jeong-bok, a student and wife. It was Korea s first nationwide tea culture organization, followed by similar groups that began to be set up. A representative group is the “Korean Tea Master s Association(韓國茶人會)”, which was formed two years after its foundation. Based on the above, summarizing the meaning of Hyodang s tea life and “Hankuk Chado-hoe” can be summarized as follows. (1) Hyodang s a great contributor to the revival of modern Korean tea culture and led the popularization of tea culture through the writing and publication of Korea s Chado(茶道), which is the first comprehensive introduction to Korean tea culture. (2) “Hankuk Chado-hoe”, founded by Hyodang, was the first nationwide tea culture organization in modern Korea. (3) “Hankuk Chado-hoe” had a meaningful impact on the formation of the “Korean Tea Master s Association”
