A Study of Up-Style design Using Dancheong Pattern from Flower Patten

  • 90

People around the world have made great efforts to develop their local culture and tradition into global trends. Since the beginning of modern globalization, it has been important to develop Korean traditional patterns by pursuing new design based on the fusion of East and West and the consideration of its influence on world trends. Therefore, one critical mission for artists is the spreading of Korean traditional culture around the globe. Under these circumstances, this study attempted to investigate the origin, historical background and symbolic meaning of dancheong (Korean art of painting buildings) patterns through a literature review. Considering the fact that Korean up-styles created by reinterpreting dancheong flower patterns from a modern viewpoint and applying them to hairstyling have gained popularity around the world, this study proposes new up-styles to reinterpret Korean tradition. In terms of research methods, a theoretical review on dancheong patterns was conducted using bibliographic data and previous theses. Flower patterns with distinctive formative features were chosen with yeonhwa (lotus flower), moran (peony), nokhwa and soekohwa patterns as motifs. After analyzing the shape and composition of such flower patterns in a formative fashion, a total of 4 different up-styles were designed, using 21-inch up-style hairpieces and manicure, and the results found the following: According to analysis of dancheong flower patterns and their meaning, interpretation of images with modern senses in diverse ways was possible. Based on the above results, this study has analyzed the shapes of dancheong patterns and materialized their symbolic meaning. In addition, it has applied them to up-styling, creating creative and unique hairstyles. It is anticipated that this study would give people from around the world an opportunity to approach the traditional Korean sensitivity through formative arts (‘up-styles’) by recomposing traditional Korean element (‘dancheong’) with modern senses.
