Translation of the War and the War in Translation: Introducing Hino Ashihei’s Soldier Trilogy to English Readers during World War II

일본 작가 히노 아시헤이는 2차 세계 대전 초기(1938-1942) 일본 베스트셀러 작가였다. 중일전쟁(1937-1945)에 사병으로 참전하며 겪은 경험을 소설화한『보리와 병사』, 『흙과 병사』, 『꽃과병사』는 일본과 조선을 비롯한 일본의 식민지에서 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 뿐만 아니라 영어로 번역되어 영국과 미국에서도 출간되었다. 히노에 관한 그간의 분석은 그의 전쟁문학이 당시 국내작가들에게 끼친 영향, 전후 일본문학 내에서 그에 관한 상반된 평가 등이 있었으나, 히노 작품의 영어번역에 관한 주제는 거의 없었다. 본 논문은 히노의 『병사 삼부작』이 영어권 독자들에게 소개된 문화적 맥락을 파악하고자 한다. 특히, 서문과 소개 글에서 강조한 내용을 분석하고 그곳에 언급된 인물들과 작품들의 의미를 찾으면서, 축약된 번역이 있다면 그렇지 않은 번역과 비교하여 삭제된 부분과 수정된 부분의 의미를 구하고자 한다. 이를 통해, 작품의 영어 소개 방식이 당대의 영어권 독자들이 히노 작품을 수용하는 데에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤음을 보일 것이다. 다시 말해, 번역자와 유명인사들이 구성한 본문 밖의 문맥은 히노 문학의 장점으로 거론되는 양가성-일본의 입장에서 전쟁참여를 정당화하는 수사와 어느 국적의 병사도 느낄 수 있는 삶과 죽음의 의미-에서 하나의 선명한 정치적 의미를 부여하는 방식으로 자국의 출간을 맥락화해 나갔다. 일본인 번역자의 서문이 지향한 정치적 초점과 유력인사가 쓴 번역소개의 초점이 다른 경우도 있었는데, 이는 히노의『병사 삼부작』이 일본어 원작 밖에서 또 다른 싸움을 이어갔음을 시사한다.

This paper aims to trace different English translations of war stories by the Japanese writer Hino Ashihei (1907-1960) through a paratextual reading of the forewords and introductions to the translations. Hino was a bestselling writer during World War II. His Solider Trilogy, including Wheat and Soldiers, Mud and Soldiers, and Flower and Soldiers, were translated in English and published in both U.K. and U.S. between 1938 and 1940. They were praised as war books equivalent to Erich Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1928). I question how Hino’s stories were introduced to English-speaking readers beyond the 1940 empire-colony context in East Asia and in such a setting, how the translators and famous figures of the time who wrote the forewords and introductions influenced the reception of Hino’s works. In so doing, I claim the English translators and other famous figures articulated one of the two contrasting interpretations of Hino’s works—the legitimization of engaging with the war as a Japanese soldier and humanitarian and universal sympathy for the Chinese as his fellow soldiers. At times, the different focuses of the translators and other contributors betrayed a mismatch in the perception of the works and conflicting political significations. This would suggest that another kind of a fight continued outside the circulation of the original Japanese work in East Asia.
