『개역개정』에 총 326회 사용된 동사 ‘말미암다’와 그것의 활용형태들은 번역어로서 원문의 의미를 정확하게 표현하며 평균적인 현대국어 사용자가 그것이 들어 있는 문장의 뜻을 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 적합한 표현인가? 이 물음에 답하기 위해 우리는 먼저 국어 어휘로서 ‘말미암다’를 역사언어학적, 의미론적, 형태론적, 통사론적으로 고찰한다. 국립국어원에 축적된 자료를 십분 활용하여 그 어휘의 어원, 그것의 사용과 관계된 문법, 사용빈도 등을 밝힌다. 관찰된 사항을 토대로 현재 한국 개신교에서 가장 널리 쓰이는 『개역개정』(1998)에 나타난 ‘말미암다’의 용례를 검토한다. 그 결과 ‘말미암다’의 현대 국어 일반에서의 용례와 다른 독특한 형태와 의미가 『개역개정』에 나타나며 그것은 한 편으로는 번역어로서 그 어휘에 상응하는 그리 스어 어휘와 어구, 다른 한 편으로는 『개역개정』의 모체라 할 수 있는『개역한글』(1961)에서 ‘말미암다’의 쓰임새를 분석함으로써 규명된다. 유난히 빈번하고 다의적으로 사용된 『개역개정』의 ‘말미암다’는 의미론적으로, 통사론적으로 몇 가지 문제를 노정하고 이후 개별 용례들의 분석과 대안적 번역 제시를 요구한다.
In the New Korean Revised Version, one particular word creates various issues for an average user of modern Korean. Mal-mi-am-da, a verb which is inflected in limited forms and often used in conjunction with specific postpositional particles, is used as a translation of various Greek prepositions and phrases to convey several meanings. Cause, means, origin, reason, ground, agent, purpose can all be expressed with mal-mi-am-da. It appears 326 times in the New Testament of NKRV, of which about 62% stand as Korean phrase for διά. In the general usage of Korean, the word is quite rare and most often it signifies cause or reason. In NKRV, by contrast, mal-mi-am-da most frequently marks agency and means. It turns out, however, the main reason for the unusually frequent use of mal-mi-am-da is due not so much to the preference of the translators in choosing particular Korean vocabulary as to their heavy reliance upon the usage of the word in the previous Korean Bible, the Revised Korean Version.
