Translational Characteristics Found in the Newspaper Coverage of North Korea s Aggressive Rhetoric

Since Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the U.S. in January 2017, ‘war of words between North Korea and the U.S. reached a climax in the period between September and November that year. The North s state and private media outlets poured out aggressive rhetoric mostly toward President Trump in the name of a newspaper commentary and government statement. Most of these harsh words amounted to a personal insult. This study examined nine of such commentaries and statements posted and issued during the above-mentioned period to know their characteristics deemed relevant to the ways they are translated and covered by the Western newspapers. The translations of such rhetoric in the West s newspaper coverage were collected through the Internet searches whenever the ‘monikers for Trump and the U.S. appeared in the North s commentaries and statements studied. The results of the translation analysis can be summed up into i) metatextual, documentary translation, ii) summary and excerpt translation using direct and indirect quotation forms, and iii) explanatory translation which aims to provide background knowledge to target readers.
