  • 94

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is a historical novel that faithfully illustrates the historical background and concept of racial segregation and discrimination in the Jim Crow era of the 1930s in the United States. This study aims to examine the life of African-Americans in Jim Crow era shaped in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. More specifically, this study is subdivided into three categories: 1) unfair relationships between black-and-white surrounding land in the American South, 2) racial segregation and discrimination practices on African-Americans in daily lives, and 3) brave and heroic black figures that has been marginalized in white-centered American history. Those three features described on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry will lead us to look for the significant implications of Jim Crow era in reflecting modern Korean society as well as understanding American society and culture.
