오늘날 전 세계의 수많은 국가와 집단 간의 갈등과 반목은 다양한 형태로 나타나고 있으 며, 특히 폭력적 극단주의는 이념적ㆍ종교적ㆍ정치적 목표를 달성하기 위한 신념과 행동이 주된 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 지금까지 폭력적 극단주의의 형성과정에 대한 논의와 합의는 일치하지 않지만, 일반적으로 급진화 과정을 통해 동기화된 폭력과 테러공격으로 나아갈 경우 심각한 상황까지 이르게 되며, 폭력적 극단주의에 빠지게 된 개인이나 집단은 자신들의 이념과 주장을 지속적으로 관철하기 위한 다양한 방법과 수단을 동원하기도 한다. 이러한 폭력적 극단주의는 한가지의 요인에 의해 영향 받고 진행되는 것은 아니고, 거주지역이나 네트워크 등의 다양한 물리적ㆍ심리적ㆍ사회적 환경요인들이 상호영향을 미치며 급진화 과정을 겪게 되는 것이다. 결국, 국가내 공동체 유지를 위한 폭력적 극단주의를 예방하기 위해서는 빈곤이나 실업, 소외, 차별 등과 같이 거시적 사회문제를 중심으로 하여 폭력적 극단주의의 이념과 행동이 확산될 수 있는 영역에서의 급진화 과정까지 적극적으로 개입하여 대응해야 한다.

Today, conflicts and antagonisms among many nations and groups around the world are emerging in various forms. In particular, violent extremism is a major factor in beliefs and actions to achieve ideological, religious, and political goals. Discussions and agreements on the process of the formation of violent extremism are inconsistent. In general, violent extremism, however, leads to serious situations when it comes to synchronized violence and terrorist attacks through the process of radicalization. Individuals or groups that fall into violent extremism are subject to various methods to continue their ideals and claims and to mobilize means. This violent extremism is not influenced and proceeded by one factor, but various physical, psychological, and social environmental factors such as residence area and network have mutual influences and undergo rapid evolution process. Finally, in order to prevent violent extremism for the maintenance of community in the nation, the process of radicalization in the area where violent extremism s ideology and behavior can be spread around macro-social problems such as poverty, unemployment, alienation and discrimination. Also, Community must actively intervene and respond.
