바울의 서신서와 내러티브를 완전히 이질적인 장르로 취급하는 현대 설교학의 일반적인 접근과는 달리, 바울은 데살로니가전서에 다양한 내러티브, 즉 (1) 하나님과 예수 이야기, (2) 바울 이야기, 그리고 (3) 데살로니가인들 이야기를 섞어 넣는다. 바울은 이 세 가지 차원의 내러티 브가 데살로니가 교회 안에서 공동의 이야기로 기능하여 공동 정체성을 강화하고, 내부와 외부자를 구분하는 이야기로 기능하여 주변 문화와 구별되는 공동체를 세우기 원했다. 이와 같은 바울의 내러티브 사용은 내러티브를 주로 청중에게 설교적 경험을 제공하는 개인적 차원으로 이해하는 현대 설교학적 접근에 대안적인 관점을 제시한다. 더욱이 교회 공동체를 세워야 할 책임을 지고 있는 현대 설교자들에게 내러티브 사용의 새로운 전망을 제공한다.
While a sharp distinction between Paul’s letters and narrative texts has been generally proposed in contemporary homiletics, Paul in 1 Thessalonians weaved different levels of narratives-(1) the story of God and Jesus, (2) Paul’s own story, and (3) the story of Thessalonians. Paul utilized these three levels of narratives as a collective story for promoting a common identity in the community and as a boundary between insiders and outsiders for constructing a distinct community. Paul’s use of narratives gives an alternative view for the contemporary homiletics which mainly understands narratives as a form for facilitating an experiential event in preaching. Moreover, it provides a new perspective on the use of narratives for preachers who undertake community formation.
