『근대 신학의 정수』에 나타난 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서의 구원의 확신 교리에 대한 해석

Interpretation of the Westminster Confession on the Doctrine of Assurance in the Marrow of Modern Divinity

이 논문은 에드워드 피셔의 『근대 신학의 정수』를 18세기 초의 스코틀 랜드 장로교회 총회에서 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서(1646년)에 근거하여 도덕률 폐기론을 주장하는 저서라고 정죄한 판결이 과연 신앙고백서를 올바르게 해석한 결과로 내려진 판단인지를 연구한다. 이 목적을 위해 채택한 접근법은 먼저 신율법주의의 풍조를 피하여 구원의 확신 교리를 성경적인 율법과 복음의 관계에 입각하여 적절하게 표현하려고 노력하 였던 토머스 보스턴과 그의 동료들이 신앙고백서를 제대로 이해하고 있었는지를 검토하는 것이다. 그리고 웨스트민스터 총회와 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있는 에드워드 피셔의 『근대 신학의 정수』의 내용을 신앙고백 서의 관련된 부분과 비교하며 마로우 논쟁에서 대립되었던 구원의 확신 교리에 대한 올바른 이해가 어떤 것이었는지를 제안한다. 또한 피셔와 보스턴이 동의하였던 존 칼빈의 입장, 즉 확신이 믿음의 핵심적인 요소라는 교리가 신앙고백서의 내용과 대치되는 것인지 점검한다. 결론은 스코 틀랜드 장로교회 총회가 판단하였던 것과는 달리, 피셔와 보스턴은 도덕률 폐기론으로 치우쳐 있었던 것이 아니었고, 그들이 신앙고백서의 내용을 반대하고 종교개혁자들의 의견만 수용한 것이 아니었다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서의 구원 얻는 믿음에 이르는 객관적인 구원의 확신과 주관적인 구원의 확신이 상호보완적이라고 이해하면서, 동시에 신율법 주의와 도덕률 폐기론이라는 두 가지 오류들에 빠지지 않으려고 했다는 것이다.

This article examines whether The Marrow of Modern Divinity is contrary to the Westminster standard concerning the doctrine of assurance. The Westminster Confession exposes, on the one hand, the Antinomian tendency which inclines to ignore the law of Christ as a rule of life, and on the other hand, the Neonomian defection which confines the freedom of the gospel with such restrictions and conditions as turned into a new law and reduces the comfort and assurance of salvation that believers are warranted to cherish. The author of The Marrow of Modern Divinity does not deny the necessity of the subjective assurance. He believes that the subjective assurance flows from the objective assurance, so the latter needs to be achieved first. Moreover, this article tries to discern whether the teaching of The Marrow differs from Antinomianism, namely, seeking the assurance of marks and signs without embracing Christ in saving faith. Having examined the most controversial doctrine mentioned during the Westminster Assembly and the Marrow controversy, it concludes The Marrow serves a useful purpose as a litmus paper that detects the presence of Antinomianism or Legalism concerning the doctrine of assurance and it is not contrary to the Westminster Confession of Faith.
