Criticisms of 19th Century America in Mark Twain’s ‘Heaven’

트웨인의 『스톰필드 선장의 천국 방문기』는 천국에 대한 담론으로서 두 가지 기능, 즉 위안을 주는 역할과 사회비판의 역할을 동시에 수행한다. 이 작품은 당대의 베스트 셀러이자 대표적인 ‘위로 문학’인 엘리자베스 펠프스의 『열려있는 문』에 대한 풍자로 쓰여 졌다. 펠프스는 기존 기독교의 전통적인 천국개념과 달리 현실세계의 즐거움이 재현되는 천국을 그려 보임으로써 상실의 아픔을 위로했다. 트웨인은 펠프스와 달리 천국을 상실에 대한 위안의 도구로 삼지 않고, 죽음을 삶의 질서의 일부로 받아들 이는 의연한 모습을 보임으로써 펠프스와는 다른 애도와 위안의 모습을 보인다. 트웨 인은 또 펠프스의 천국이 너무 협소하다고 비판하며 그것을 우주적인 사이즈로 확장 시키고 다양한 종교를 가진 다양한 인종으로 채운다. 이런 방식으로 트웨인은 백인중 심주의와 미국중심주의를 풍자한다. 펠프스의 천국이 이생의 즐거움이 유지되는 곳으로 그려진 반면, 트웨인의 천국에서는 지상에서 가난하거나 운이 나빠 불행한 삶을 살았던 사람들이 자신의 가능성을 펼쳐 보인다. 트웨인이 그린 이런 천국의 모습은 미국의 백인 우위 인종주의와 계급적 불평등에 대한 간접적인 비판이라고 할 수 있다.

Mark Twain’s Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven serves two functions: consoling its readers on the one hand and, on the other, delivering social criticism through its discourse on heaven. The novel was written as a burlesque of Elizabeth Phelps’s The Gates Ajar, a prominent example of “consolation literature” and a bestseller at the time. Unlike conventional ideas of heaven based on traditional Christianity, Phelps includes secular joys of this world in his portrayal of heaven, which consoled its readers suffering from the pain of loss. Twain, on the other hand, refuses to use the concept of heaven as a tool for consolation but instead offers comfort in a different way by remaining dignified and accepting death as an inevitable part of life. Twain also criticizes Phelps’s narrow portrayal of heaven and expands it to a cosmic size and fills it with various ethnicities and religions. In this way, Twain satirizes white supremacy racism and American imperialism. While Phelps depicts heaven as a place where the joys of this world are continued, Twain’s heaven is a space in which the poor or the unlucky, having lived miserable lives on earth, are able to fulfill their potential. This sort of depiction of heaven can be considered to be Twain’s indirect criticism of America’s racism and class inequality.
