학교 밖 아이들: 왜 그만 두며 무엇을 해야 하는가?

School dropouts: Why they dropped out and what to do for them

우리 사회에는 학교를 떠난 학교 밖 아이들이 28만 명이 있다. 이들이 학업을 중단하는 시점은 중학교 졸업 후 고등학교에 진학한 때이며 이는 일반계고나 전문계고의 구분 없이 공통적으로 일어난다. 학교를 그만 두는 이유로는 학교에 가야할 필요성을 못 느껴서, 검정고시를 하려고, 또는 공부하기 싫어서와 특기나 소질을 살리려고가 각각 1, 2, 공동 3위를 차지한다. 처음 학교를 결석한 때는 중학교, 고등학교, 초등 고학년, 초등 저학년의 순서로 나타나며 학업 중단의 단초가 결석임으로 처음 결석한 시기는 학교 밖 아이들의 대처방안에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 학교 밖 아이들의 생활공간은 자기 집이 절대 다수이며, 가출해 pc방 등에서 생활하는 것으로 나타나며, 하는 일은 아무 것도 않거나 친구들과 놀거나, 검정고시 준비, 아르바이트 등을 하고 있다. 향후 계획은 검정고시나 학교 복학처럼 학교교육을 생각하거나 이와는 달리 완전히 학교를 떠나 취업을 계획하 고 있다. 학교 밖 아이들의 주요 관심사를 사회관계망으로 분석한 결과, 공부, 학교, 친구가 중요한관심사로 나타났으며 그 중에서도 공부가 핵심관심사이다. 이는 학교 밖 아이들에게 공부할 수 기회를 지속적으로 제공해야 함을 시사한다.

It is estimated that currently there are around 280 thousands school dropout in Korea. They dropped out from school after entering senior high school, regardless of school types. ‘Don’t need to attend the school’, ‘Preparing for high school diploma-equivalent’, ‘Don’t like studying’ and ‘Develop the talents’ are ranked 1, 2, 3, respectively, with reasons why they dropped out. They were experiencing school absent for the first time when they entered the junior high school. The first school absent period is important because it is a starting point getting into the dropout. They mainly live in so-called PC room after dropout and make money by part time jobs. They have plans to get back to school or prepare for permanent jobs. According to social network analysis, for dropouts main concerns are studying, school, friend, respectively. This fact implies that they are allowed to have opportunities to study when needed.
