20세기 초 유럽의 눈에 비친 한국 - 카를로 로세티의 한국관을 중심으로 -

The image of Korea in eyes of Europe in the early 20th century: the example of Carlo Rossetti

본 연구의 목적은 대한제국 시기 이탈리아 출신의 외교관 로세티의 한국관을 분석하고 그것이 전통적인 주체와 타자의 이분법적 담론에서 예외가 되지 않는다는 사실을 증명하는 것이다. 1904년 출판된 로세티의 󰡔한국과 한국인들󰡕은 그 동안 예외적으로 편견 없이 서술된 객관적인 저작으로 평가받아왔다. 그러나 이러한 평가와 달리 로세티는 자신의 저작에서 같은 시기 한국을 방문했던 다른 서구의 여행자들의 기록과 마찬가지로 서구의 문명 세계 그리고 원시와 야만으로서 의 비서구 세계라는 이분법적인 틀뿐만 아니라 서구의 문명 세계가 비서구 세계를 교화시키고 문명으로 발전시켜야 한다는 논리를 여과 없이 드러낸다. 로세티는 무기력하고 무감각하며 잔혹한 한국인의 품성, 한국의 역사적인 고립과 폐쇄, 더럽고 불결한 환경뿐만 아니라 정치와 행정, 교통과 통신, 가족제도, 민간신앙등에 나타나는 전근대적인 요소들을 강조했다. 본 연구는 로세티의 한국관에 대한 분석을 통해 로세티에 대한 기존의 평가를 반박하는 한편 그가 다른 모든 서구의 여행자들과 마찬가지로 17세기이후 시간의 흐름에 따라 계속 강화되어 온서구와 비서구의 이분법적 틀을 부지불식간에 수용하고 재생산하는 역할을 수행했음을 주장한다.

This study aims to analyze the image of Korea, appeared in Corea e Coreani, published in 1902 and 1903 by Carlo Rossetti, the second talian consul to the Korean Empire. Rossetti’s work has been regarded as exceptionally unbiased and objective. The Italian diplomat, however, did little to hide not only his perceived dichotomy between the civilized Western and barbaric non-Western worlds but also typical colonial logic, according to which the latter should be civilized by the former. Rossetti, in his descriptions of Korea, highlighted not only the pathetic and cruel characters of Koreans and historical isolation of Korea but also pre-modern elements in politics, public administration, transportation, the traditional family system, and folk religion. This study attempts to refute previous appraisals of Rossetti’s work, maintaining that he reproduced the core elements of the traditional dichotomous narratives between the Western and non-Western worlds, which had been reinforced continuously in history since the 17th century.
