Examining Korean Students’ Perceptions of the GCE Project in English Class at College

본 연구는 세계 시민교육이 대학 교양영어 수업에 접목된 사례를 소개하고 세계 시민교육 프로젝트가 세계시민에 관한 이해와 영어 학습에 미치는 영향을 학생의 관점에서 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위해 2019학년도 1학기 교양영어 강좌를 수강하고 있는 13명의 학생들이 세계시민교육 프로젝트에 10주 동안 참여하였다. 본 연구의 타당도와 신뢰도를 위해 프로젝트 사전 사후에 실시된 설문, 이메일을 통한 인터뷰, 교수자의 관찰 일지,그리고 트위터 게시물과 같은 문서 등의 다면적인 자료가 수집되었다. 자료 분석 결과 대다수 참여자들은 대학 영어 수업에서 시행된 세계시민 프로젝트에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 특히 프로젝트를 통해 참여자들은 세계 인식, 책임 의식, 책임 행동에서의 세계 시민성 향상을 경험하였다고 말하고 있다. 또한, 영어 학습 측면으로는 영어사용 기회 확대, 영어학습의 필요성 인식, 더 나은 영어 학습자로서의 이미지 확립 등에 도움을 준 것으로 인식하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 영어 교육 환경에서의 세계 시민교육 활용 방안과 의미를 논의하였다.

This case study explores students’ perceptions of the Global Citizenship Education (GCE) project incorporated into a general English class at a Korean college. In particular, the study examines how students perceive the project influences their sense of global citizenship and English learning experience. Thirteen college students participated in the GCE project for ten weeks during the spring semester of 2019, and data were collected through survey questionnaires before and after the project, email interviews, field notes, and documents (e.g.,Twitter posts). The findings of this study show that the students responded positively to the project, perceiving that it improved their English learning experiences and helped them to have a better sense of global citizenship in terms of global awareness, global responsibility, and responsible action. The implications of the GCE project for English language classes are discussed.
