An Inquiry into Early Childhood Educational Meaning of Adventure of John Burningham`s Picture Books

인간의 삶에 있어 모험은 늘 함께 한다. 모험은 ‘위험을 무릅쓰고 어떠한 일을 하거나 그일’을 의미하는 것으로, 인간이 일상생활 속에서 어떤 일을 시도하는 것 자체가 일종의 모험이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 유아가 새로운 세상을 경험하고 배우며 성장하는 것 역시 일종의 모험이다. 유아들이 읽는 그림책 속에 모험을 주제로 한 내용들이 많지만, 그 중에서도 존 버닝햄(John Burningham)의 그림책 속에 모험이 많이 등장한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 모험의 개념과 특징을 이해하고, 이에 근거하여 존 버닝햄의 그램책에 나타난 모험의 유아교육적 의의를 밝히고자 한다. 모험에 대한 이해와 그림책에 나타난 모험의 특징에 근거하여 존 버닝햄의 그림책에 나타난 모험의 유아교육적 의의를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 우선 그림책에 나타난 모험을 통해 유아의 호기심을 채워줄 다양한 경험의 기회를 제공하며, 유아들의 흥미를 유발하고, 상상력을 마음껏 펼칠 수 있게 한다. 또한 그림책에 나타난 모험을 통해 유아가 스스로 자신을 발견하고 새로운 가능성과 희망을 기대하면서 삶을 긍정하는 자세를 기를 수 있게 한다.

Adventures are always with us in human life. Adventure means “doing something at risk or doing it,” and it is a kind of adventure for humans to try something in everyday life. In this respect, it is also a kind of adventure for young children to experience, learn, and grow up in a new world. There are plenty of children’s picture books about adventures, but many of them appear in John Burningham`s picture books. Therefore, this study aims to understand the concepts and characteristics of adventure and to present the educational meaning of adventure in John Burningham`s picture books. With on the understanding of adventure, the early childhood educational meaning of adventure in John Burningham s picture book is as follows. Adventures provide various opportunities for children to fill their curiosity through adventures in picture books, induce interest of children, and spread their imagination. In addition, the adventures shown in picture books allow the young children to discover themselves and to build a positive attitude toward life while expecting new possibilities and hopes.
