중등 세계사 교육의 목적에 관한 논의

A study on the purpose of world history education in secondary school

계사 교육의 위기를 둘러싸고 다양한 측면에서 해결방안을 모색하는 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 그러나 세계사 교육의 목적은 무엇이고, 현재 우리에게 필요한 세계사 교육은 무엇인가에 관한 논의들은 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 고에서는 역대 교육과정에서 언급된 세계사의 성격 및 목적은 무엇인지 살펴보고, 현장에서 역사를 가르치는 교사들이 생각하는 세계사 교육의 목적에 관하여 조사하였다. 교육과정에 나타난 세계사 교육의 목적은 개정 시기별 국가, 사회적 요구에 따라 강조점이 달라졌다. 교수요목기와 제1차 교육과정기에는 ‘민주주의’가 강조되었고, 제2차 교육과정과 제3차 교육과정기에는 ‘조국 통일’, ‘민족문화 발전에 이바지’와 같이 세계사 교육이지만 민족주의적 요소가 특별히 강조되기도 하였다. 제7차 교육과정 이후부터는 다른 문화 및 전통의 존중, 다양성 존중과 같은 다문화적 요소들이 강조되고 있다. 현장 교사들이 생각한 세계사 교육의 목적은 상식과 교양, 세계화 시대를 살아가는 기본 소양 습득 등 실용적인 측면이 강하였다. 그리고 역사교사들은 세계사에서 중요한 내용을 선정함에 있어 현재와의 관련성을 판단 기준으로 삼았다. 이에 본 연구에서는 현장 교사들의 세계사 인식과 최근 학계의 연구 성과들을 중심으로 ‘세계화 시대를 살아가는 시민 자질 형성을 위한 세계사’로 나누어 제안해보았다. 본 연구는 교육과정에서 제시한 세계사 교육의 목적이 실제 교과서 서술에는 어떻게 반영되었는지 살펴보지는 못했다는 한계를 가지고 있다. 또한 설문 대상 교사들의 표본이 역사교사들의 생각을 일반화하기에 부족하다. 이러한 부분은 추후 연구를 통하여 보완되어야 할 것이다. 그리고 세계사 교육의 연구 범위를 ‘무엇을 가르칠 것’인가에서 ‘선정된 내용을 어떻게 가르칠 것인가’로 확대할 필요가 있다.

Research is being conducted to find solutions in various aspects over the crisis of world history education. However, little is discussed about what the purpose of world history education is. Therefore, this paper examines the nature and purpose of world history mentioned in the past curriculum, and investigates the purpose of world history education that teachers of history teach in the field. The purpose of global history education differed according to national and social needs by the time of revision. In the Syllabus Period and in the 1st Curriculum Period, Democracy was emphasized. In the 2nd and 3rd Curriculum Period, although it is a part of world history education, the nationalistic elements such as unification of the country and contribution to the development of national culture were emphasized. Since the 7th Curriculum, multicultural elements such as respect for other cultures and traditions and respect for diversity have been emphasized. The purpose of world history education that history teachers in field thought was strong in practical aspects such as common sense, culture, and basic knowledge in the age of globalization. This study proposed the direction of world history education by dividing it into world history as a culture and world history for the formation of world citizens , focusing on the teachers recognition of world history and recent academic research results. This study has a limitation in that it does not examine how the purpose of world history education presented in the curriculum is reflected in the textbook description. In addition, the sample of the teachers surveyed is insufficient to generalize the thinking of history teachers. This needs to be supplemented by further research.
