초기 영웅소설 가운데 하나인 <장백전>은 원말명초 왕조 교체기를 배경으로 천자의 자리에 도전했다가 뜻을 이루지 못하는 장백을 주인공으로 한 작품이다. 본고는 장백이 타인의 기대에 부응하면서 삶의 방향을 설정해나간다는 점에서 관계 지향적 인물로 보았다. 그는 가족과 분리된 후 심각한 내적 위기를 경험하며 타인과의 관계 속에서 정체성을 형성하지만 여전히 불완전한 존재로 남아있었다. 천자지위 획득을 통한 사회적 자기의 실현과 가족 회복을 통한 온전한 자기 되기는 장백에게 있어서 상충되는 것이 아니다. 그 기저에 관계 지향성이 존재한다는 점에서 결말부 장백의 선택을 통합적으로 파악할 수 있다. <장백전>의 서사는 난세를 만나 능력을 펼치는 군웅들의 활약과 가족 지향을 두 축으로 삼고 있다. 이름을 길이 남기고자 하는 사회적 욕망과 유대감으로 묶인 관계 속에 수용되기를 바라는 원초적인 욕망이 경쟁적으로 서사를 추동하고 있는 것이다. 상충할 수 있는 두 축을 관계 지향성을 지닌 장백을 통해 긴밀하게 엮은 것이 이 작품의 성과이다.
One of the early hero novels, <Jang Baek Jeon> is a work of which its main character challenges for the emperor but fails it on the period of the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty. This study’s main idea is Jang Baek’s strong relationship orientation. He experiences internal crises after the separation from his family, forming his identity with ascetic and assistants. But he still shows deviation from his social identity. To him, it does not contradict self-realization by getting emperor’s position and reunion of family. <Jang Baek Jeon> has two axes which are the heroism in the middle of the turbulent age, and family orientation. On the two axes, it is the achievement of this work interweaving desire of fame and family affection closely by Jang Baek who has strong relationship orientation.
